When installing Windows XP, when you boot from the disk it gives you the option to format your disk drive. This means wiping all the information currently on it off, and starting from a clean slate.

I recommend DBAN for a complete reformat.

If the machine came with 98 then there is no point in installing XP.

This is because you need a windows license per PC. And since OEM licenses are non transferrable you'd need a retail license which is worth more than the PC.

Again if the BIOS doesn't support booting off CD then the PC is probably too old / not worth installing XP.

XP has to be activated before you can download patches.
So far this year Microsoft have released patches to fix flaws that allows anyone to take complete control of your machine if you visit their web site and it contains a) graphics or b) text
