Having a problem with my pc which i can't figure out. When i put a disk in to the drive to play it or to burn onto, my pc is not recognising it and i can't figure out why it is, i think it might be a problem internally but not sure..

has anyone else had a similar problem and no how i should go about trying to fix it?

a long shot but if anyone has any advice i would appreciate it.

    OK.
If the door opens its not a power issue so:

1.clean drive with a cd cleaner
2.make sure cd your putting in isnt scratched.
3.check ide cable is ok in back of unit.Swop if you have a spare.

all above presumes you can see the cd drive in my computer!!!

after that buy a new drive. Was the media now the same as when it worked?
If you are pc able you could put cd rom first in the boot menu in bios, put it win 98 or xp cd and reboot. If cdrom works it will tell you to press a key ......
    regards kieran

Try, Presuming your are on XP, The links should pretty similar for Win 98 up though.

Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager - DVD/CD-Rom Drives Click the + Beside that to expand the dropdown menu and then right click on the offending drive listed and go into properties and the first tab on the left should have in the middle of it "Device Status" If it says it okay then it may be a dirty lense or something else, The troubleshooter there may also be able to help. If you can't figure it out get onto your PC manufacturer if the drive came with it.

If it boot CD works then try F8 to get into safe mode to see what happens there.
outside chance of the SONY root kit disabling it

try playing an audio cd - the drive will run at 1x speed instead of it's fastest one. some CD drives have a play button on the front which bypasses the BIOS too.

which OS and which PC ?

Used to be a really weird problem with windows 95 disabling secondry controller on PIIX4 chipset until you installed the correct driver. This effected the chipset so any OS / Boot disk would fail until fixed.
