Hi, ok basiacally i've just installed FreeBSD 5.4, and everything seems ok apart from the GUI, iv'e gone through the hand book loads of times and i think im going in wrong with the X config file. If i type just X the gui will seem to start but it just loads a grey screen.
I would apreciate any help with this.

    Regards,
    Martin

Have you installed a window manager or desktop enviornment?
If you have, then after setting up an xinitrc (which might be done automatically, it's a while since I did this in FreeBSD) you should run 'startx'.

twm, probably the most basic of window managers, should be installed with X, and it might already be configured in the xinitrc file so 'startx' might start it. If it's not starting, then adding 'exec twm' to your xinitrc file (should be in the 'xinit' directory of the folder that contains your xorg.conf, on my system "/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc') should do the trick.

Running 'X' doesn't process the xinitrc file, and therefore doesn't start a window manager/anything.
