Open Ports With Esat BT

    Hi,

Just a quick question regarding the open ports which Esat make available to their customers?

I was previously with Eircom & I had no problems using the Port Forwarding feature on my SMC Wireless router connected to the BB router supplied by Eircom, however since signing up with Esat I have had no luck getting Port Forwarding to work again. I've tried several different configurations & followed steps outlined on www.portforward.com but still no luck. I've tried using www.whatsmyip.org to scan the ports but all of them are coming back as closed, however I am guessing this will be the result if Port Forwarding is not correctly configured from within my LAN?

Is there something fundamental that I am missing with regards to the settings on the Esat BB router or do Esat just lock down their customer's tighter than a duck's ar*e??!!

Any help greatly appreciated on this one because I am at a loss. The routers I am using are listed below & it's Esat's 2MB DSL connection which I have.

    Prestige 623R-T1 - f/w V3.40(OO.2)

    SMC 2804 WBR - f/w V1.00.020

    :)

What is your set up? Is the modem in a bridge mode with the router? If it is, then you have to set up port forwarding on your router.

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I guessed this is what the problem is alrgith, but wasn't quiet sure. Is their anyway around this using the Prestige router that you know of?

I don't have an RJ-11 port on my SMC router & don't fancy having to buy another router as the SMC one is pretty good.

So how are you connecting the SMC and Prestige together then?

My setup is the Prestige connects to the phone line and has the ports forwarded in it. My Belkin wireless router is in bridge mode and one of it's 4 LAN ports are connected to the LAN-10/100 port on the Prestige by a straight through network cable. Everything works fine like that.

Mine is connected the same as yours.

    N.B. RJ-11 = Telephone line, whereas RJ-45 = network cable.

Where abouts on the Prestige router can I enable port forwarding towards the SMC router or is this automaticaly set?

Thanks for eveyone's help on this.

Duh, *slaps head*. Didn't read that properly.

Go to the web configurator anyway, 192.168.1.1
    Select NAT under Advanced Setup
Select SUA Only and click Edit Details
Enter the port, or range of ports, on the left and the IP address of your PC (probably 192.168.1.33) on the right.

That should do it. Be aware though that BT do throttle certain ports. I'm pretty sure they throttle the emule standard ports (6881-6891 I think) so change the default ports to something like 10000 or 20000. Same for your bittorrent client. Something in the 10000-20000 range should be fine.

If you have more than one PC connected to the router, and you use DHCP, then your IP address may change from time to time. Best to set the IP manually and then forward required ports to each PC.

Jor El you are a good man - worked a treat!

I didn't realise I had to specify the ports I wanted to forward in the Prestige router as I just saw the All Ports part already filled in, probably would have helped if I put the IP of my wireless router in there, now it's my turn to slap the head!!

For anyone having the same problems I reccommend this post, easy to follow & works.

    Thanks again Jor El

No problem, I aim to please. I can't remember where I got the settings for mine, combination of guesswork and www.portforward.com probably.

Is it actually worth opening the ports when it comes to emule and bittorrent. Do you notice a sizable increase in download speeds.

Well before I opened the ports I used to get 10kb max, now I get 220kb max :) so its definitely worth it.

Any ideas, how i could set up a Prestige Modem and Linksys WRT54G like this. I just spent the last hour trying do this but i can't get anywhere

I have the Prestige and a Belkin wireless router working together. Put the wireless router in bridged networking mode first. Make sure both IPs are in the same range, but different, like 192.168.1.1 for modem and 192.168.1.2 for router. Set up the ports in the Prestige as outlined above and that should be just about it as far as I can remember.

call me stupid but I can't find the "Bridged" option in my routers config. I actually had it set up this way before but for the life of me I can't remember where I found the option. All I can see is an option to switch between Gateway and Router. I've upgraded the firmware since so maybe Linksys took that option out or i'm just blind

Look for an option to enable/disable DCHP.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 820 ✭✭✭qBot

Got that..So do I just set it to static? and if so what ip address do i put in it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 820 ✭✭✭qBot

That was a stupid question. Did it this morning..Took only a few seconds...No NAT problem anymore. Speeds seem slightly up...

Anyone had any satisfaction with uPNP. I don't really want to disable the dhcp. I have a few computers hooked up down here and dhcp was a handy way of automating them.

Hope someone can help me with portforwarding.
I have BT Broadband (after switching over from Eircom) and have a Netopia 2247NWG-VGx.
I have tried to forward the ports as per the instructions on Portforward.com and while networking and stuff like that isn't my forte I am pretty certain I could follow the instructions. However no matter what I cannot forward any ports. I have even turned off my firewall totally and it still won't work.
I am using F-Secure Internet Security 2006 and have Windows Firewall turned off but still no joy. Could anybody help me out with this. It is wrecking my head.
    Thanks
    Dace
