Has to have the county name in Irish, the digits have to be a certain sized font, as far as I know the hyphens have to be a certain size and also the blue EU part has to be on it

It has to be issued by the gov.

I think they fail you on the NCT if you havent got Baile atha Cliath on it. Remember seeing something about it before.Somehow I doubt the gaurds would pull ye up over it.

[Pedant] They will only fail the NCT if you haven't got Baile Atha Cliath on it AND it's a D reg [/Pedant] :D

That looks ok to me. As long as everything required is present I don't think any complaint can be made about "my car" or whatever at the bottom.

Doesn't matter how it looks, if you didn't get them from the gov it's not ok. You might get away with it but I've heard of people getting crazy fines for using custom plates so why bother?

"the gov" don't issue plates at all, they just issue the numbers and the owner gets the plates made, anyone can do it. As long as they are to the correct regulations they are perfectly legal.

Sorry lads - Quite a few of you are providing incorrect information. The law regarding number plates is quite clear. Nothing other than the EU/IRL logo, county name in Irish and the registration number should be displayed. The font is even standardised.

From the Revenue.ie site the following PDF displays what may be considered a legal number plate in Ireland:

    http://www.revenue.ie/leaflets/carplate.pdf

Anything else (including smaller sizes, dodgy fonts etc) is not legal and therefore leaves you at risk of being pulled up on a charge by a Garda who's looking for someone to have a go at.

    Sorry,

    Gil

well i doubt they would go nuts over my car name wrote under the reg. ive seen reg plates with different fonts and all. it would be interesting to see wat they say. i shall fill you in if i get pulled LOL

the guards will use a number plate as an excuse to give muppets in skangermobiles a fine, if they can't pin them down on anything else

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,306 ✭✭✭blahblah06

well mine wont be a scanger car. bought brand new this yr.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,956 ✭✭✭✭Villain

The registration plate law does not apply to vehicles registered prior to 1 January, 1991,

So unless you have a car registered before that you can't have anything on your plate except the county in Irish, the EU symbol and the reg number in the set font. If you have anything else your just giving a Garda an excuse to do you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,306 ✭✭✭blahblah06

lol should be fun so. there ordered now so if guards have any problems ill just get a normal set made up with the car as standard. i really dont think they would make an issue of mine compared to ones ive seen with slanted text and all

If you can afford a Hummer just buy the Garda that stops you. ;)

NO, I repeat, NO variation from the officially prescribed plate format is legally allowed ........including text along the bottom of the plate.

When EU plates were introduced, it was specifically mentioned the even dealers were not allowed to have their names along the bottom of the plates.

(Some dealers are producing plates with an extra lower 'rim' into which they incorporate their name to try and get around this clause, but it's a grey area if these are even legally valid.
N.B. I'm not talking about the frame dealers place around plates).

    Speaking of frames -
If you want to add your name, car model etc, why don't you get a specially printed plate frame to go around your plates ?

(East Coast Car Print, Greenhills Rd, Tallaght can supply two personalised frames for c.€35. A bit ricey some might say, but better than a fine or summons !)

Yes I always notice special branch cars don't have anything on the back plate from a dealer.

I remember a year ago the Mayor in a certain City had his plate in heavy bold font and instead of the EU/IRL logo he had his City's crest, as usual in this country one law for some and not all.

ye silvera i understand were your comin fom but i highly doubt anything would be said. If it is said sure ill just use the standard plates that ill have in the boot of my car. sure the font is smaller then the baile atha cliath part so its not that noticable

Why in gods name do you want the type of car printed in little letters under the number? If people dont know what it is by looking at it they can always look at the badges on the car that clearly indicate what it is.

Dodgy plates are a skanger trademark, doesn't matter what year the car is. They might just take you for a rich skanger, and really throw the book at you! Seriously though, custom plates will go against you if you ever get pulled for anything else. Guards have a lot of discretion, and their overall impression of what kind of a person you are can be crucial.

You'd be lucky not to fail the NCT for having incorrect plates. Ask unkel - the "Baile Átha Cliath" on his plate was half faded, and they failed him.

There is a workaround. You will notice that when you buy from some garages, they add a trim around the plate, with the garage name on it. This is legal, since there are no extra marks on the plate - it's just an attachement in front of the plate. Ask a garage how/where they get this done.

FYI, the government don't issue registration plates, they only issue the registration number.

You could do what a lot of other people do: Hold onto the original plates and swap them out before your NCT. Personally, I've no problem with modified plates, so long as they're the right colour, size and font.

well seamus i can change the plates if needs be for the nct. its not as if its that big a deal. my whole point is there is a lot of ppl otherwise out there that have mad plates. if the guards have a prob ill change it no worries. im not a man to argue.

anan i think ur off ur head tbh if you call a 06 car a skanger mobile your obviously very odd. If i can recall i would say a skanger mobile is a micra done up etc. I dont think they would reckon im a skanger driving around. I dont have that rough look about me. most guards are sound about things like that. I just wont give them a reason to pull me over. if the guards do say anything ill just tell them ill change them when i get home and go to the guards if they really want to say it. if they want to be arseholes about it then let them

I have mine at a smaller, bolder font with VW Golf on the bottom. Got pulled over for (just about) breaking a red light before Christmas in Santry, where the Gardaí can be quite strict, esp when operation freeflow or whatever you call it is on. After fining me €60, the Guard just asked me to clean my back plate (you couldnt see it at all with the dirt) when I parked next if I had a cloth in the car.

I did put the original plates back on for the NCT though, it only takes a minute.

Here's the plate and the car - I don't think it's a skanger car either, just nice looking

AFAIK this does not apply to imported classic/vintage vehicles which have to be reregistered here. They can use the ZV xxxx format in silver on a black background if they wish. It does not apply to older registered vehicles pre 1991? and it must not apply to the Irish Defence forces as I frequently see military vehicles with silver letters/numbers on a black background.

Blahblah, I got them made up in a motor factors in Dundalk, they were only €20. Its at a Maxol filling station on the north side of the town on the right (near Lidl or Aldi I think). Yer man told me the Gardai are clamping down on them and that its my responsibility of I get caught, not his coz he warned me. I'd say they're just strict up in Dundalk coz there's a good few boy racers up there, and perhaps other dodgy activity

Nowhere in Drogheda would do them for me, they said the Guards had been in with them and stopped them from making the custom plates, but mine aren't too fancy and are legible so I don't think they'd stop me for them, what harm is a tiny bit of text at the bottom of the plate after all? Nowhere like Dundalk for a bit of criminal activity ;)

last time I asked about this I was informed that there was also a Revenue interest in this and it's not just the Gardai who can/will take action if they want to.

It's only a bloody reg plate, just get the thing done properly and leave it on the car. FFS it's only a method of transport.

Agreed. Note it doesn't apply to yy -CO-1234 format either if the car is older than 1991.

Some people have more of an interest in cars than you, obviously. Its a hobby to some people, others just want their cars to look nice and keep them well to retain their value. The latter applies to me. I just got new reg plates because my old ones were a bit shabby looking, I got a nicer, cleaner font and the car looks better and more attractive when I have it valeted and waxed - to most car enthusiasts. Sorry for wanting my car to look good:rolleyes:
