My sister and I were planning on doing a summer in Hawaii last year, but like yourself could find really little info about the place so we decided to go to San Diego for the first 2-3 months of our trip and find out a much as we could while we were over there, seeing as alot of surfers would have travelled to Hawaii at some stage ya know....anyway, it turned out we didnt get to Hawaii in the end cuz we ran outta cash, but basically what I know is that its quite expensive over there to live, but getting a job or a place to live shouldnt be too much of a hassle, maybe just have a look around www.craigslist.org a while before you leave to suss out apartment prices and jobs, you can find out alot of info that way...also I hear that jobs in Hotels in Hawaii are pretty plentiful if thats the type of thing your looking for for the summer. We got lucky and sorted out our accom on craigslist before we left, but if you can Id say spend a couple days to a week in a hostel or hotel when you get over there and find out as much info about the area that would suit you most to live in - really important when it comes to public transport, jobs, etc...Lonely Planet and Let's go do a Hawaii travel book, hard to find, but it does exist....Good Luck!

Hawaii is very expensive due to where it is. Everything is very dear, food housing etc. Do your research before you do.
