Oooops .... edited my first post.
    Now they're in.

    here is another link.
    http://uscaero77.free.fr/orni/parkhawk/index.htm
It shows the entire ornithopter mechanism with pics up close, and also has video of camera footage from a flying orni.

Jesus, never seen one of those before. Didn't know it was even possible. Are they flying just using the wings are is there a prop as well? Have these ever been built on a large scale?

Biggest I know of is 8 feet wingspan, I have a pic somewhere.....
No prop needed - they go perfectly well on the wings flapping mechanism.

these ones are electric, but I've seen glowfuel ones too. One used a nitro car engine complete with slipping clutch. When u throttle down, the clutch kicks in, and the wings stop flapping to allow it to glide until u throttle up again.
But most seem to be leccies now.

Unbelievable - I didn't know it could be done. The mechanism that birds use to fly is extremely complex.

It definitely needs a bit more power than the normal flying models to do it with flapping wings. A cheap ornithopter called Cybird has got itself a bad name for not flying well enough for some fliers.

I suspect it's a bit like helis (needs better than average stuff to go alright) only easier to fly than helis.

I really like the little camera he has on the model in the last link.

Always liked these things, could have some great fun if you equipped a camera to it and went flying near the nearby livestock....father ted intro'esque...

Though...farmer may complain, not to mention it wouldn't be very nice to the livestock, maybe should be left as an idea. :)

    They do!
I think the record for human power flapping wing is presently in Russia, 300-400 metres last year.
