anybody have any experience/knowledge/ideas about moving a home pc between countries (cheaply and safely).
bring it with me on the plain:confused:
    ship it, is that safe:confused:
i haven´t bought the pc yet so i can buy a suitably compact one if thats an option.

i hope this thread isn´t on the wrong board.

You have no chance of bringing it with you on the plane :) I once had a PC shipped from England, came safely enough. The cd drives, floppy and hard drives all came seperately with loads of padding, but yeah get yourself a decent laptop and your all set.

well a laptop is what i was planning to buy origionally.
but i want it for games so it has to be good spec; in this case, pcs are just so much cheaper. i figured if it doesn´t cost to much to move it between countries than a pc might be an option.
    so, can anybody advise?

Not knowing where you're going to, but, why not buy it when you get there?

all i can think of is trying someone like Fed Ex, UPS or some other courier, you dont want to bring it as a piece of luggage or the baggage handlers will use it like a football :)

moving country more than once over the next few years. so doesn´t matter where i buy it first i´ll need to move it long distance sooner or latter.

yeh, i wouldn´t trust the baggage handlers on a flight. i´m looking into Fed Ex and those crowds at the mo´.

Dell use Couriers (certainly in Ireland) and I suppose elswhere in Europe, so the machines/packing must be up to the job? ...

Do what guys like Dell do in terms of packing ..... moulded polystyrene inserts and good strong boxes (it's a good idea to always hang on to the original packing materials in case you ever have to ship it back to the manufacturer or move home) .....

I moved to London, got my bro to ship it with DHL from Cork, cost €75 and took about a week. I only got sent over the base unit, not the monitor mind you. All worked fine.

It'll be fine if you pack it well.

I recommend www.postvan.com cheap and good.

Consider building/getting a mate to build a kick ass small form factor pc.

Handy in that they are easy to transport and are much more upgradeable/better gfx than laptops.

    Best of both worlds

I brought a midi tower from Geneva on the plane. I packed it carefully in a suitcase and hey presto.

I also took an older iMac in a taped up carton the same way. Tell them at the check in that it is fragile!

If you decide to buy one abroad bring a keyboard or two with you QWERTY is not used everywhere. Here in France they use AZERTY and the general layout is different. Bring all your own software and be prepared to reformat and reload all software. Remember you will not be able to easily change keyboards on a laptop.

Put it into suitcase ,put magazines or clothes all round to act as padding ,if its a new pc, bring reciept with you.to show,u might get stopped in customs.Or else just ship it,buy monitor ,when u get there.U don,t wanna end up paying tax on it .

Yeah i can't why it couldn't be brought to wherever your going in a suitcase, I brought a good few electronics from New York last year, I had a camcorder and a telephone plus all the cables of the camcorder etc. I carried the camcorder and the bag as carry on luggage but I checked in everything else. I'd advise packing well Styrofoam etc and tell the Airline it is fragile. Take out travel insurance in case it gets lost or damaged or stolen. Back-up your important files twice and leave one set at home and take the other set with you, At least then if anything happens to your PC or it gets lost you'll be able to restore them on a new PC. Also weigh the PC and check you don't go over your luggage allowance, Nothing worse than getting hit with a whopper of a bill at the airport.
