This is an extract from MediaGuardian
The organisers of this year's Ryder Cup have today hit out at the Irish government following speculation that it is planning to torpedo BSkyB's existing contract to show the golf tournament live.

The government has the power, under European law, to add the Ryder Cup to its list of events that are guaranteed coverage on free-to-air channels even after a contract for pay TV operator has been signed.

The taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has already signalled his desire that the event should be screened on a free-to-air channel such as RTE or TV3, despite the long-standing contract between the PGA European Tour and BSkyB.
(Coverage in the UK will not be affected.)

Well it has just claimed the head of the chairman of RTÉ, Fintan Drury, whose company is representing the Ryder Cup. One wonders how this situation was allowed to emerge, however given Drury's contacts in the world of sport, a similar situation was bound to emerge.
