    2001 1.4 Octavia Timing belt change.

    Just got a call from my brother, his timing belt is coming up to be changed, and was asking what else should be replaced along with the timing belt.

    I'm not too familiar with the 1.4 octavia engine, is it the same as the 1.4 VW Golf?

    Should the water-pump be changed at the same time?

    Should the pully's and idler/tensioner also be changed?

    He's had confilicting reports back from garages about what should or shouldn't be changed along with the timing belt.

    Dave,
    The timing belt is the same as the 1.4 Golf of the same age. There are 2 belts on each car, both should be changed. The main belt goes from the crank to the camshaft, driving the waterpump on the way. The second belt, is a 'slave' belt driving the second cam. The tensioners and idler pulleys should always be changed on this type of engine as they are prone to failure. I'm not sure about the waterpump, but you may as well change it while doing the timing belt. The pump may be ok now, but when the timing belt is replaced it will be running at a slightly higher tension than the current belt and the bearings may put put under too much pressure. The timing kit is quite expensive (around €200) but it is not worth taking the risk.
