I downloaded it with the intention of getting the Norton 2005 Anti-virus for a broadband less friend, I made a crap of it and instead of downloading an install file as is common with the other Google software e.g. Picasa. The bloody thing downloaded it self onto my hard drive and replaced my Norton 2003 who’s live update was ok till October 2006. Now I have lost 4 months of Anti-virus, Is there anyway of reversing this or am I stuck with Norton AV 2005 till June when the 6months free runs out? Also is there anyway to download the Norton AV 2005 without it making crap of my pc ? I am considering AVG instead anyway. What is the Jury’s opinion on Avg vs Norton Anti-virus ? I did a system restore to yesterday and it put the Norton 2003 back in place only it wouldn’t work, I then had no anti-virus so I reversed the System restore and updated the live update and switched on Norton 2005, I am now scanning my system to see how long it will take, I scanned yesterday on the 2003 version and it took 14mins to scan all of my C drive which is 16.5GB full out of the 58.5Gb capacity. I have the whole 160GB HD partioned with the other 91GB idle on the F drive, I recently backed up a few of my dvds to it about 7gigs. I have my Norton 2003 program files backed up on DVD as I backed them up about a week ago as part of my strict monthly back-up routine. Would this help restore my Norton Av 2003 or would I be better off sticking with Norton 2005 now that I’ve it running perfectly. If I’m better off to stick with the 2005 version, Is there any way to get rid of that Stetescope Icon and restore the 2003 TV Icon, Much nicer IMO !!

I guess I really don’t live up to my nick do I? :o But I’ learning bit by bit! :)

Yeah I am thinking that too, I'm about to download it, Is it possible to download the install file without installing it myself as happened with Norton? Also is the sticky link given for it the most up to date as it was published early last year?? I will probably update when ,y own Norton AV goes defunct. I back up regularly anyway so it is not the biggest issue to me.

Thanks for that, Got it down and it didn't impose it self on my system :) I'm surprised of Google tbh to let symantec to this to users. Is there a manual for avg to be picked up anywhere. PDF or whatever will do.

The best antivirus is NOD32 from Eset, it even protects against the much talked about WMF exploit:
    on the 5th Jan

ESET, a global provider of security software for enterprises and
consumers, announced today that its NOD32 protects against the new
Windows Metafile (WMF or .wmf) vulnerability for which Microsoft does
not yet have an available resolution. Users running Microsoft Windows
ME, 2000, XP and Windows 2003 systems are vulnerable to a loophole in
WMF which enable cyber criminals to take control of online devices and
execute malicious code. With a patch from Microsoft pending for January
10, 2006 at the earliest, ESET is renewing its offer of a free 30-day
trial of its popular NOD32 antivirus software to non-customers.

Users of both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers are in
especially vulnerable to system compromise. As WMF are a main component
of graphic code that determines how users view web pictures, simply
selecting to display athumbnail in Windows Explorer or visiting a
website with an altered banner ad could trigger execution of the file
exploit. Additionally, ESET researchers have determined that the
Googledesktop search product and corrupted files within MSPaint can
result in execution of the vulnerability.

ESET's NOD32 utilizes ThreatSenseR technology, a sophisticated detection
system based on advanced heuristics and generic signatures, to
proactively identify previously-unknown malware, including the current
WMF exploit, in real-time. ThreatSense is built into NOD32 s single,
unified scanning engine to provide comprehensive protection so users do
not need to rely on additional point solutions for spyware and adware
protection. Without proactive heuristic detection, users must wait for
updated versions of their antivirus software, creating a critical window
of vulnerability that can last hours or even days. Additionally, NOD32
has been independently verified by AV-Test.org to proactively protect
against 206 of 206 tested WMF vulnerability exploits.

The use of Microsoft's operating system and software solutions is
prolific, which makes a very large user base susceptible to the current
WMF vulnerability, said Rick Moy, vice president of marketing and sales
for ESET. In order to prevent any propagation of the vulnerability,
ESET recommends that organizations take immediate preventative action.

The advanced detection methods used by ESET's NOD32 anti-virus stops
hackers from using this exploit. Customers running NOD32 are protected
without having to take any special actions. For more information or to
download a trial version of NOD32 please visit www.eset.ie/download

AVG is about as cheap and cheerful as it gets though.
