I use GrabIt, though admittedly, it's not great. Just handy for nzb's. Might check out newsbin pro.

If it's crashing all the time on you it's because you have a badly cracked copy of it right ? There's tons of DRG released copies of it all over the net and they all crash. You wanna use it, you pretty much have to pay for it.

Like anything, i'm pretty sure it must be possible to crack, I just dont think any group has succeeded with any of the 3.x releases.

EDIT: it is by far the best newsreader though, worth paying for.

Grabit is trash, same with newsbing pro (imho)

Thinking of getting into this Newsgroups as seems to be a lot there

Tried Grabit but Newsleecher seems better

Is it worth buying it and what newsgroups are users signed to ?

With utv broadband and they have the below on their site

For the UTV support and ni.* newsgroups use the following news server - news.utvinternet.com

For a full newsgroup listing try the following news servers:-

    http://news.cis.dfn.de
Registration to this news service is free of charge. The service allows you to read and post to the groups.

    news://news4.euro.net
Registration to this news service is immediate and free of charge. The service allows you to read but does not allow posting to the groups.

Anyone use these or is it better paying for a 3rd party newsgroup ?

It's much better to pay for access from a decent newsgroup provider, most free/very cheap ones wont have access to the groups you'll be looking for.

Try www.easynews.com, I find them excellent. 8 euro something for 28 gigs of downloads. Perfect. Speeds are great too, I always max out my 3meg line, about 360k a sec downloads from easynews.

If anyone wants USeNext let me know. I signed up for the 2 week trial and then stupidly forgot to cancel my credit card so they charged me for a whole year, but reall it no use to me... If you want it met me know, no reasonable offer refused.
    cheers

What software are you using with this ?

Is it as easy as BT in relation to downloading ?

I'm using easynews af the provider, newzbin for nzb access and unison to download, its the best client out there

I've found http://www.news.astraweb.com/ to be good for people who have a cap, (like most of people in ireland :) ). As you can pay for a download amount and it doesn't expire, ever.

They also have a deal now for $25 for 90gigs which is great value. Great speeds, 25days retention I think, Good anonymity and privacy.

As for newsreaders, i've only used newsbin pro, it does the job, haven't tried anything else so can't compare.

if you use easynews they have a lovely web interface where u can find the file youre looking for, then get the interface to make you a .nzb file.

.nzb are like link files, they link your client to those files on the newserver and your client grabs them from there. I usually use www.binsearch.info to make myself .nzbs if im just looking for something and dont know where it is. Otherwise easynews's web interface is perfect.

    Newsleecher for the downloading itself.

First newsleecher checks to see if NTL's servers are carrying the files, which they are about 50% of the time. If NTL downst have the file then it grabs from easynews. Such a handy setup now that it's all done. It really does totally own bittorrent, theres no comparison.

Lads I just subscribed to a news group the other day after a lad in work told me about it and holy hammers batman these download speeds (I'm getting a meg a second sometimes, 600k average) make downloading the entire internet an option.

But Grabit has just stopped working for me. I think it might have something to do with me installing .NET Framework 2.0 earlier today, but Grabit just loads and doesn't download anything - just flutters between 0k and 0.72 k - any ideas on what might be causing this and how to sort it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,279 ✭✭✭DemonOfTheFall

You could best sort it by not using grabit at all.

I've repeatedly tried to use that program and it just doesn't work at all. It constantly crashes / fails to download / deletes files that I have already downloaded...
