Sorry if this seems like a complete load of cliched tripe, but ive never heard a reasonable explanation for why civilians need guns at all. why is any civilian granted a gun licence? I dont mean in places like the north, where banning gun licences isnt going to change anything, it doesnt matter to your average provo if hes licenced to shoot you or not, but i mean in middle america or co. offally... why?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

wouldnt mind a go at that gun myself. go shooting some hillbillies. hours of fun to be had

Because it's their constitutional right to be stupid gun crime victims.

I must admit I would love to do that! Can't see anything wrong with this kinda thing, controled environment and all that. But yeah, I agree thats it's stupid allowing civilians to own handguns etc.

    That's hilarious!

Who the hell brings a little girl to a firearms display? Are Barbie dolls not popular any more?:D

What do you think they gave the little girl for Christmas? A hand grenade?

Hmm, so we are all allowed to bash American culture, but when a poster says people are "Savages" for killing and chopping up animals in the street he gets shot down because its a different culture and way of life and he shouldnt judge it...strange that

It is a constitutional right but why is it a right? From what I understand it is based on the idea that an armed civilian population acts as a balance against an armed government. The government is for the people, by the people yada yada but as a backup in case the government decides to turn against the people then the people have guns and can at a minimum cause harm to the government, if not completely remove them. That was the original intent and it was borne out of the first European settlers in the united states who had come from living under governments and kings who ruled with very little regard for the people. Personally I think it's an archaic model and has no place anymore but some people will still use this to justify having weapons.

God they are all sh*t shots! its a wonder they can hit anything in the US. No wonder they all need machine guns. Need to stray the place with bullets to hit anything. Wasters!

eh, I don't think the gun laws in even the most gun-happy US states are that lax. Imagine what Koresh could have done to the ATF and FBI with one of those things (the minigun thats blowing the crap out of the cars - not the girl's machine gun, though I doubt that would be legal anywhere in the US either).

edit: I watch again - I think it seems like something bigger is being used becuase several people with these machine guns are firing at the car simultaneously. Silly me.

I was thinkin the same thing. Like jesus, most of the bullets were landing about 30 yards form the car!

Twas a joke, if I shot like that everyone would tkae the pi** at claybirds. They must have ran off a couple of thousand rounds before they blew up the car. If the US army fire like that no wonder there is so many deaths over in Iraq. The Iraq guy stands in middle of road, US start shooting, he stands there lift gun and bang. Walks off road then with US army still firing away madly!

Only watched a quick bit of the video so I didn't get to see all the weapons being fired, but basically they're squad assault weapons designed to lay down suppressing fire, they blanket an area with bullets to make anyone in that area take cover and prevent them moving or returning fire, it's not designed to be accurate.

As Kernel32 said, it's largely a balance to allow the civilian population rise up against a potential tyrannical government, and also civil defense purposes (against possible invasion). In addition to that many see it as an important right for personal defense, and considering how violent a society the US is it's hard to argue with that.

Suppressing fire?yes but watch the video. Half the time they aint even close. You blanket an area but sometime they are near the top of the hill and next thing it jumps down to the bottom for a couple of seconds and then another big jump back up to the top. This isnt surpressing its just a bad aim!

People who chop up and kill animals in the street are meat-eaters, people who shoot people in the street are savages. Theyre not much worse than someone who'd put a girl behind a gun. Both are cultural but It's two very different scenarios... I mean its basically Halaal vs American Gun Laws! I know which one Id pick as the lesser evil anyday

Well theres americans for ya & there gun culture!!

'Hey daddy when i grow up i want to massacre people with this gun'

Why give a child a gun for chris sakes, they don't need to know about them. There meant to be innocent when there that age, no???

Can you really not see that there's a huge difference between some criminal who goes out and shoots someone and someone who uses a gun for sport or defense ? What about some scumbag who breaks somone's skull with a hurley, are they the same as someone who is actually hurling ?

(believe it or not I actually thought of that analogy without noticing your user name :) )

Given the prevelance of guns in America it's surely a good idea to introduce guns to kids at a young age so that they know how to deal with them and the rules involved. I think it's safe to say that whoever brought her has guns at home, it'd be irresponsible in that case to not expose her to guns.

Watch Bowling for Columbine if you want a pretty decent look into American gun culture. Guns are dangerous no matter in who's hands.

See in Cavan where the father bought his kid a shotgun. Fellow was about 21 but had never had a gun or anything. Left it loaded in house, fell over and shot his sister at Xmas dinner table. She died. Nobody should have a gun without the proper training, full license, insurance, proper safe in your house and also a bit of cop on. Also really to get a gun should be part of a gun club.

Yes theres a huge difference, thats why I said people who kill aniamls are meat eaters, people who shoot people in the street are savages... are you sure you read that properly?!

Fair pointt, but she looks a bit young. Why not just get a foolproof* gun cabinet instead

I may have misread I thought that when you said
people who shoot people in the street are savages. Theyre not much worse than someone who'd put a girl behind a gun.
you were saying that the people who would put a girl behind a gun were almost as bad as the savages who shoot people in the streets.

Why not just get a foolproof* gun cabinet instead
I think it was Dougles Adams who said "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof was to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." Of course a good gun safe is essential anyway, but it can't be completely relied upon.
