Im thinking about getting some voip and was initially going for blueface, but after doing some checks there are loads of these completly free (or one off £5) like voipcheap, voipbuster, etc.
Is there a good reason to choose blueface with its recurring charges over the free ones ? The free ones seem too good to be true, there must be some catch ?

Depends what you want. For example:
Skype do free PC to PC calls between skype clients. You pay to make calls to landlines & mobiles. You can also get a handset, but works through the PC, so the pC must be on.

With Viopbuster, again you make calls from your PC, but to a landline or mobile. Some countries free to landline, others you pay.

With Blueface, you can either use from your PC with a softphone or plug a regular phone into an ATA. Calls to other voip (sip) customers are free. You can have the pay as u go option or take the subscription and get a phone number.
And if you have wireless or cable broadband, you can port your existing phone number to Blueface and save the line rental.

You should try each of them to see what suits your needs. Blueface has a free weeks trial.

so only bluface works with an ATA ? I dont want to spend 99 quid on an ATA and then find blueface is rubbish and voipbuster is great

    No.

You will get better quality using an ATA than a headset to your pc though. An ATA is designed to handle calls so it does it well. If you are using a headset/PC and your pc does something, your call will probably start to break up.

I've actually achieved some of the best call quality with X-Ten and a headset. The PC was obviously idle. It's incidently not a configuration I would recommend as voice and PC should be separated, but I wouldn't necessarily expect better call quality from a hardware box.

But note that the BlueFace special offer ends this Sunday, 15th.

I guess the main question then is : is it worth getting the ATA, will it give me better quality - if I go with the ATA, i might as well go with blueface.

I think you will generally get better quality with an ATA and you don't have the substantial extra cost of powering your computer 24x7 to use the phone.

Whether or not you go with a particular provider's monthly subscription package depends mainly on whether you want an Irish geographic number or not. If you do want a geographic number then go with Blueface. If you don't need the number then essentially once you have an ATA you can have all the free Irish/UK/other calls you like with people like Voipstunt, Voipcheap.co.uk etc.

I would recommend an ATA. As Blaster said he achieved excellent quality with his pc while it was idle but if his pc had decided to do anything (Virus scan, MS induced reboot, etc.) the quality would have dropped.
