AMD or Intel for build

Not trying to provoke a flame war but my Dad has asked me to help build him a new rig.for around 700 euro.

I was thinking of an intel chip as one of the main usages will be video editing. Also socket 775 is a bit newer (Though not better) than socket 939 and might provide more upgrade options in the future. He is quite eager to get this new machine built so I don't think he would wait for AMD's socket M2 to come out.

    Anyone any advice?

    Thanks

Have a look at the intel 2.8 ghz dual core chip.

    It's 265 euro on komplett.

If your da will be using software that takes advantage of dual core then it may be a good choice for him.

Cheapest amd 64 dual core is the 3800+ X2 which is 355 euro. An AMD 64 rig will roughly cost 100 euro more than the sample spec.

    sample spec:

    cpu: intel 2.8ghz dualcore. (€265)

    mobo: Abit ALV8-V (€127)

    1 gig of bog crucial ddr2 pc3200 (€95)

antec sonata case with 380 watt psu. (€110)

    GFX:ATI X1300 256mb pci express (€104)

DVD recorder: LG lite scribe drive black, retail (€56.80)

Please take into account that the pentium is far less powerful than the intel....

Might go a long way towards future-proofing it!

Good recommended budget rig by the way!

    Intels ARE pentiums...

And dualcore AMD's are better than dualcore pentiums. Check out the benchmarks. At the time of release, the slowest AMD dualcore beat the fastest pentium dualcore. Not quite sure how the table stands at the moment though.

How about a s939 athlon 64 system, Intel dualcores are only reasonable, the AMDs trash them in every way even video encoding that intel are renowned for.

And if you dont want dual core, a AMD system will work out cheaper and outperform a Intel with similar spec;)

if you do decide to go down the dual core path you may want to consider this comparison between intel and AMD.

yup, as you can see some of the lower end AMD X2s are beating the best Intel dualcore available

LOl what they are made by the same company Intel.

im sure it was a typo

    It was clearly a typo...

Anyway, the guy clearly can't afford to put an X2 in this build. The processor alone would eat over half of his budget.

I think AMD own intel, but this PC is clearly a job for a Pentium D if I ever saw one.

the point of AMD or Intel is sightly mute. What is important is that there is an upgrade route.

I would stick with a single core with a higher speed, and leave the way open for dual cores in the future. This would be socket 939 for AMD or 775 for Intel. I know AM2 is coming soon but that can only mean a drop in dual core socket 939's.

Ok, since it's such a limited budget, you may have to go single-core.
    I made a list here; €703+shipping, though it doesn't include mouse/keyboard (~€30), a monitor or an OS(~€90).

This is the last word on CPU's ( for a few months anyways). http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/11/21/the_mother_of_all_cpu_charts_2005/
Well you also have AMD-FX60 coming but that'll beyond the budget.

As for Lower end AMD X2 beating Intel X2... not all the time (but most of the time) according to THG. That Smithfield Pentium D 840 holds its own with the video editing. ( the apps that use dual core anyways.

everything seems ok, except for the intel. i'd go with an AMD.

Just like to say thanks for all the advice.

uberpixie and Fanny Cradock thanks for the component lists. They will definantly
    be very useful.

While I know AMD beats Intel performance wise, I think this does suit an intel build.

It's just AMD are sun setting 939 and I think my Dad will be looking to upgrade in the future. He will be mainly video editing and I think the intel chips held up well in those tests.

I'll do my best to get him to wait for the new AMD socket M2 though. I know thats what I'm waiting for :)

Is socket 775 even going to be that long lived? Every new Intel Processor these days also seems to need a motherboard upgrade, despite the socket being physically the same.

Wasn't there something about the latest chipsets not supporting the basic PentiumD 820, but every other dual-core chip?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 698 ✭✭✭vishal

no i think that is just the nforce 5 boards, as long as you get a 945 or 955 board you will be fine, i think
