Ok, I'm new enough to Martial Arts.

I took up Jiu Jitsu a while ago (3months), but have been boxing since I was a young lad. I'm now thinking about trying out MMA.

Where can I go to train ? Are there many competition, events or leagues in Ireland (just to watch at first)?

And how many on the boards are involved in MMA?

Hi Thatguy.. Depending on where you live, there are many places you can train.. Let me know where and we can point you out somewhere.

If you want to compete, have a look at the amatuer mma league. It starts up again next month. Info is on here: http://www.mmaleague.com/

Lots of us on here train in MMA. You'll find us all posting in this forum specifically.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

When you say Mixed Martial Arts; roughly how many types of martials arts can you train in, or is it just a few bits from different arts ?

Not sure if I asked that right, but you get what I'm saying. :)

I'm living in Kildare, but can't find any likeminded people or places to train.

Mixed Martial Arts as a whole incorporates striking, clinch work and ground work. You'll learn to strike, work on your takedowns and submissions. How you go about doing it ranges but the most common combination is muay thai, boxing, wrestling and brazilian jiu-jitsu. This varies with fighters but is your typical base.

I know of a few gyms in Dublin (John Kavanagh's place - sbgireland.com, colm o'reillys place - twokingsmma.net) - there are a few others.. I'm not sure about Kildare though.. Maybe someone else here knows?

Ok, so I'm on the right track as far as boxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu go. What else do I have to take into account as far as training goes?

Can anyone tell me a bit more about the MMA gyms in Dublin (Straighblast), does anyone here use them?

And lastly, as sports go is this a hard one to get into, starting out at least ?

It's easy to get into.. If you just visit an MMA gym there and train, all your questions will be answered. Straight Blast Gym produces the best fighters in Ireland. Drop by and see for yourself.

As a sport MMA is as easy to get into as going to mmaleague.com.

MMA in Irealnd has a pretty decent structure to go from total novice to pro, both in it's coaching structure (note: plug for SBG Ireland) and it's competition structure

    MMA League (Rookie Division)
    MMA League
    Ring of Truth (Amateur Rules)
Ring of Truth (Semi Pro Rules)
    Bushido (Pro Rules)
    Pride FC!!!!! (Fighting abroad)

    Badda Bing Badda Boom.

    Hope this helps,
    Colm

Does Ring of Truth and Bushido Ireland have websites by any chance?

Are there any Kickboxing leagues in Ireland that follow the same format by any chance?

Thanks breadmonkey. I keep getting a forbidden message when I try to go to the Bushido Ireland website though. :(

One slight omission (for simplicities sake I'm sure) from Colm's list are the shows in Northern Ireland which are also on the track from up and coming fighters. That is a fighter graduating from the MMA League could look for a match in the Ring of Truth or the UFR (Ultimate Fighting Revolution). Both shows now stipulate successful participation in the MMA League as a pre-requisite for getting a match, which means there is aneasy to follow progression in Irish MMA, which ensures that a fighter is ready for the next step before he is allowed to make it. I wish there was something like this in place when I started out, would have made the transition to MMA so much easier!

My bad, forgot about UFR. Only saw the show once, under it's previous name, and it was a great show. It's only flaw was that it was lacking in sexiness because I wasn't part of it.

Does anybody know the new website for Bushido Ireland or why the current website is always down?

might be something to do with the fact that the changed the name to just Rings.. Not sure.
