Myself and my bf are heading to Austria this year.

We've got the flights booked already, just no accommodation got. Flying into Vienna and back from Salzburg.

    We were thinking:
    Vienna - 2 nights
Western region, Tyrol maybe? - 4 nights
    Salzburg - 1 night

We're kinda stumped on where to stay though for the 4 nights. So far, we've looked at Seefeld, Zell Am See, Kitzbuhel, which all seem lovely. But has anyone here been to those places, and which would they recommend?

    Thanks a million :)

What do you plan on doing for the 4 days?
Have a look online to see what towns have what festivals on when. Every town pretty much has some sort of festival on during summer. Most of it revolves around alcohol surprisingly enough. There's lots of mountain scenery worth seeing in tyrol and the town/villages are quite beautiful. There's also lots of mountain hikes or cycle tracks if that takes your fancy. Do you plan on having a car? or bicycles? or public transport?

Thanks for the reply Imposter :)

Well wherever we plan on staying, we'll be biking it around more than likely. I'd really like to see the ice caves near Zell Am See though as well, but I'm totally stumped as to where to stay!

What places were you in? Which was the nicest?

I live in Austria and tbh haven't done that much travelling in the summer. I've been in quite a few of the ski resorts though. Haven't been in Zell am See yet (but that's on the plan before the end of this season). It does look beautiful though and is probably a cheaper alternative to Kitzbühel which is likely to be quite expensive (definitely is in winter!).

I've been in ice caves near Halstatt and found them quite dissapointing (not to mention bloody cold)! But I suppose if you're there you might as well see them and the ones near Zell am See might be better.

Biking is a great way to see the area but it's far from flat! I'd go with Zell am See and maybe a night or two somewhere further on in/towards Tirol in the Hohe Tauern national park (The english doesn't seem to be working but you might get the jist of it from the german). Some of the scenery is absolutely stunning there especially if you get up on a glacier on a clear day!

I think you've got just about enough time in Vienna and Salzburg too. I found a day enough in Salzburg and 2 to 2 1/2 days enough in Vienna to do the main touristy things and not be rushed.

If you need train timetables and stuff look at www.oebb.at. You may be able to hire bikes from train stations too. Another site for booking accomodation is tiscover.at - not sure if there's an english version and i'm too lazy to check :)

As you probably know Aer Lingus fly to Vienna and Salzburg from Dublin and Ryanair are starting a flight to Salzburg in April. Return train from Salzburg to Vienna would be about 50-60€ pp I reckon.
