    Hi,
Ive never burned DVD's before, so now that I have a DVD burner, well, I think I just might!

For standard movie discs, should I be getting + or - discs?

    Please and thanks
    Ciano

Hiya. I'm not sure of the exact reason, but I always use DVD +R's and have never had a problem. Just make sure that +R is compatible with your DVD player because some are only -R's. Most DVD players now are +RW/-RW and dual layer so should be fine. I would recommend buying in bulk from a company like Komplett as you'll save a load of cash in the long run. :D

I heard DVD + uses a better method of writing, not sure about the details though.

Like General said, make sure your writer supports + format, all the latest drives support both formats though

And this is the place I buy cds/dvds from

Anyone know if you can buy blank DVDs bigger than 4.7GB.
The thing Im trying to burn is almost 8GB.

Dual-layer DVDs are available but not all burners can use them, they are also very expensive.

Google for a free prog called DVD shrink and use that to compress your content to fit on a standard 4.7GB disk.

For burning backups of commercial discs or PC authored compilations there is no real difference between + and -. They are both compatible with a similar number of players and just about all players made in the last few years will play both.

The only area where there is a difference is with standalone real-time recorders. The format used for + allows menus and with +RW is instantly useable without finishing.

€35 for 5 discs, you can get 100 4.7GB discs for that amount. Unless you really need the copys to be identical it's not worth it.

Use DVD-R/RW They are approved by the DVD forum and if if wasn't for the "plus +" lobby:- DVD+ is supported by Philips, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Ricoh, Yamaha, and others we wouldn't be in this mess only for them. There should be one format and one only. Look at the mess NTSC and Pal have created fro the TV world. People often end up with worthless discs or whatever they want to share is incompatible with friends PC. Use DVD- and say no to this thrash of competition in such a meaningless thing. Most Drives are now dual format to check to see what your is follow this lead, Start - Control Panel – System – Hardware – Device Manager – DVD/CD-Rom Drives and it will tell you what sort of Burner you got and whether it is - or + and for gods sake don't change any settings in there only take a peep and move on.

DVD- "Dash" all the way they are not know as "minus" contrary to common perception.

go with the dvd+r format..it's more compatible with normal dvd players...
depending on your driver speed you can either order from www.komplett.ie or www.svd.co.uk if you need the printable 16x ones...these are very good but shipping costs €16 from here
