Has it ever worked okay or is this a new config.

First place I'd start is the power settings in the Bios. I'd also try booting first time into safe mode. Is the PC stable in Windows after it's been through the reboot routine?

its a new config, the shutting down problem was there since i built it but i installed a new dvd rw drive over the weekend and thats when the powering up cycle started

I'd try different ID and cable combination on the drive to see if it sorts it.

    That's an awesome machine!

The RAM should be in the orange slots, is it? It could be that simple.

Its most likely ram. It sounds like the ram bus speeds are different
