Hey I was wondering does anyone know where to get good duck callers on line (preferably not e bay) and in particular a wigeon caller. Is there an on line store that you'd recommend for hunting equipment, not guns or ammo but clothing and other gear

    In the US;
try LL Bean,Cabelas,Gander mountain,or Bass pro shop. They pretty much stock hunting clothes, black powder, bow hunting stuff.

    Europe
try Frankonia in Germany or Kettner.AKAH is a good bet as well.

A Wigeon whistle will only cost you a couple of €uro, and you can get them at most hunting/fishing shops.

I have a Lockvogel (?) electronic caller - a wigeon call comes as standard with it.
Only ever used it for magpies and crows and there's a very good rabbit distress call on it for foxes - has them flying in.

    Sound cartridges:

Bought it a few years ago but it was very expensive - from Jeffers in Bandon.

It is very loud and has taken a fair few knocks but looks and works like new.

If you buy from Cabelas you ARE going to be caught for customs and the miriad of extra charges that UPS etc have.

I actually have one of these as well and its an amazin bit of kit, I use it mainly for crows and magpies myself (unbelieveable how quickly they respond to it) but I think I'll be doing a bit more shooting this summer and might try it on foxes and the likes. The problem I have with it is the fact I would need to call back to the wigeon with more accuracy than the electronic caller allows, its a pre recorded call and wont suit every situation. I also think the electronic callers might be illegal for game birds and wildfowl not sure though

I was always told using electronic callers for game is illegal?

would it not be easier to just download mp3's of the sounds and replay them on ur player with a pair of patery powered speakers

We did this to great effect last year. I have an mp3 made out of two different recordings i got off the web. I mixed them together so it sounds like a pair of birds arguing. The mags come in from as far away as it can be heard. I have seen them come from well over a hundred and fifty yards away to the bush I was sitting in. Got the player from Argos for 30ish euro and have old walkman speakers to amplify it.

Did the same with grey call sounds. Have got as many as a dozen while waiting out the morning duck flight.

Haydels in the US do some great mallard calls but all the wigeon whistles are much the same. And the "power whistles" might be louder but are not as good as the trad disc whistle or two 12 ga brasses stuck together (with caps knocked out).

http://www.western-rivers.com/free.php afew calls here might be of use

psittacosis: A friend got 2 of them for Christmas

    I think thery're only 50 euro here?
Never used it but was lamping last week with a lad that was also out with the other guy and he said mine was much louder.
Must compare them side by side in the field.

Anyone notice how the rabbit distress on the Lockvogel brings in hares? Weird but I've often had them come flying to it.

I thought they were only illegal if the call is an actual recording of the animal? It would be fine if it was a recording of an artificial call?
Not sure which the Lockvogel is but doubt the guards would give a tack of notice either way.

    Vegeta,
Missed this thread the first time around.
The Sonderman 66 is almost a dead ringer for the now discontinued Olt # 66 duck call which is usually in my coat pocket. http://www.djcalls.com/
Lohman classic is a good choice and will not break the bank.
    http://www.tidepool.co.uk/product.php?productID=11&subcatID=3

    Greylag goose calls.
    eddie@nixonengltd.freeserve.co.uk
Eddie Nixon in the UK tunes DJ calls to sound like the birds we see here.
FYI : Greylags can be hard to call as they tend to fly in family groups and the old boy is the boss, you quite often find the gander does not say much but when he does it's normally to shut the children up, and then you won't hear a peep out of them. At which time they will then fly on and ignore you compleatly. :)
Greylags respond well to a Canada Goose call like the Olt # 800 - blown as you would for Canadas. http://www.djcalls.com/jzcart/showitem.php?id=3605
