Driving to the North

I have to drive to Bangor from the Dublin area tomorrow, and was wondering do they stop you at the border to check your licence on your way there or back?
Because I've only ever gotten the bus back from Belfast and they checked our ID. It's just I'd rather not get stopped, as I'm only on a provisional.

if you are stopped you will be driving without a licence...not a good idea...

No, there aren't any border checks these days.

They do seem to stop the buses though, it was only in the last few months it happened to me, so I'm worried that they do it to some cars, while not all of them.

I'm up and down from the North like a yoyo and I've not been stopped once, no matter where I cross the 'border'. But as jhegarty said, it's not a good idea with a license as technically you're not insured with a licensed driver in the car with you. If you do get stopped you're screwed, no matter whether it's the Gardai or the PNSI!

Who checked your I.D? PSNI/Gardai/Army? I find this a bit unbelievable in this day and age!

Its not worth the risk. Murphys Law applies. If you were to have an accident, you could get yourself in a spot of bother.

The Gardai, on the way back to Dublin. Twice in the last year.
I guess they're looking for tourists without proper visas really. Cos I think they found people on the bus who had a visa for UK but not for ROI.

Don't think I'll risk it now to be honest actually, just in case.
Just so pissed off, cos I know I'd probably have my licence now if the ****in waiting list wasn't so long.

    Thanks for advice!
