yeah I got one before xmas!! You get 2000 points for signing up and then once you get you credit card bill you get the points the following month...

And works just like a regular card? No hidden charges or anything?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,964 ✭✭✭Hmm_Messiah

I've one and like it so far 9except forgettign to pay pff what I bought)
Found the customer service freindly and helpful

was a problem/delay transferring the points across, but when I got an ID number from pigsback all sorted in a day

Find the online account access nice too . And credit card cheques, mmm very handy for those who don't accept credit card payments (but should have put that utility bill on the creditcard ??)

They're issued by MBNA aren't they? In which case you'd better pay on time each month or all your piggy points won't be enough to cover the late payment penalties.

As soon as I sa the thread title I had to think of MBNA. It won't belong before you get screwed on charges. Be careful - be very careful...

hmm...... must look further into it.

I have a "dormant" (limited exceeded hehe) card from TSB, couldin that eventuality just transfer the balance over to TSB.

The way i look at it is that at least i'll be getting some form of return for my spending as opposed to my current 0 return. Never pay late, so i'm not worried about the interest.

It's not the interest that's the issue. It's the additional penalties you face if your payment is even 1 day late. But so long as you're careful to pay in plenty of time you're probably safe.

if you want a credit card BOI are the best, low interest and low late payment penalties. if you pay on time with MBNA then your fine.

Seen a review in one of the weekend mag's.

TSB/Permanent ICE card has the lowest rates.

Then again you don't get Piggy points.

And the other thing to consider if you change Credit card you pay the

Government Tax for each card. Even though you've still only keep the one.

Government was supposed to be looking into this to make it easy for people

to switch as many cards a year as they like and pay the one Tax.

But their probably tied with the Luas and the port tunnel at the mo.

Just got a statement in from MBNA. I had sent payment early enough using online banking but over shirstmas it seems to have gotten delayed and now I've a €15 euro late charge - and a stupid payment protection charge. I'll bet the delay was on their end.

I can't wait to get rid of it.

As long as you close one card and move to another card you won't be charged goverment stamp duty on each card. The only way you will be charged this, is if you have two or more cards active at the same time.

I've paid payments over Christmas to my pigsback card, I was worried that they might be delayed hence incurring interest, but they went through fine.

As for payment protection, ring up and cancel it, they try to sell that to me every time I call.

Are you sure about this. I have an MBNA card, and I rang them up to change to the pigsback one but they said that I would have to pay the government fee on the new card as soon as I got it, even though I have already paid the government fee on my existing card.
I've had an MBNA card now with abot 4 years and never had a problem, always found them very helpful any time I had to enquire about anything.

ur right, when u close one card, ask for a letter of closure and confirmation of gov tax being paid, as u will pay it when u close the card, then u send that into ur new CC company as proof u have paid it

Is the tax for the next or the previous year when you pay it? Its just when you say that you have to pay it on closing the account, it sounds like you are paying early because you are closing the account. Is this the case?

when u pay gove tax, u pay it for the prev year, not the current one, so if u close after 1st april, u pay gav tax for that year up to the 1st of april the following year

Why whats the penalty for paying late? Can't i just transfer via internet banking immediately? don't i have 58 interest free days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

Had one for ages but i always pay in full via direct debit so never have a charge. Just like a laser card but with a months delay on being charged and piggypoints too

The penalty for paying late is the interest charge, not sure of the exact amount, around 15% I think.

You have a maximum of 58 interest free days, you actually have until the end of the following month to pay it, e.g. anything you buy in January whether it be on the 1st or 31st will have to be paid for by the end of February.

It takes 5 working days for the transfer from online banking to go through so make sure you make the payment around a week before the end of the month.

if u pay late u will get charged a late fee, around 15 yoyos,

if your a full balance payer u will get interest for the 1st time, the interest isnt 15%, its what ever ur contract rate is divided by 12 for the monthly,

if you always carry a rolling balance u will get ur interest as nornal,

best thing to do if you intend carrying a rolling balance is set up a DD for min amount each month and made additional payments if need be

I used online banking to transfer and it was still way over late. Funny how another transaction during the same session transferred to another account a lot quicker...

    €15 cheat.

maybe one reason for that is MBNA arent a clearing bank, ie when u make a payment i think it has to hit AIB firstly then they let MBNA know payment has been recieved,

probably different to cards who have clearing banks, aib, boi ect

Can i not just set up a direct debit that takes the full balance out of my account on time every month?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,277 ✭✭✭Smithers

yeah u can, then u avoid interest
