Accessing Multiple Satellites

    Hi,

I have a Sky Digibox and I was wondering how can I access other Satellites besides the default Astra and Hotbird ones?. I want to access FTA channels in Latvia/Lithuania/Russia that are on a different satellites. I think one of the satellites is called Sirius 4.0 . Do I need another Satellite? What Hardware do I need exactly and if someone could give me a dummies guide to setting it up it would be great!!!.

    Thanks in Advance:)

you are probably best off leaving your Sky setup alone and buying a whole new FTA setup. Take a look in Maplins or on satellite.ie for prices.

The reason I suggested a new FTA system is that you will probably need a bigger dish than the sky dish you already have and your Sky digibox will not handle other satellites that well also.

By the way, satellite.ie also has prices for a FTA motorised system, this would enable you to get many many more satellites than Sirius. Someone else here will be able to tell you if you can receive Sirius 4 here in Ireland.

A FTA satellite system using 80cm or 1.1m dish and a Motek motor.

Look in Maplin (local and www.maplin.co.uk ), Peats, and www.satellite.ie.

5E has Russian/Ukrainian stuff. I get it perfect.

Unless you have multiple LNBs on Dish (which a Skybox can't select) the Sky box dish is pointed at Astra2/Eurobird 28E (BBC/ITV/Sky), or Astra 19E (German mostly), or Hotbird13E (Polish, Arabic, Italian and others).

It can't be picking up Astra and Hotbird.

The Sky box is great value for Sky Platform on Astra2/Eurobird, but no much good for anything else.

You don't need CI or CAM on the Satellite receiver.

I used to to have a Sky FTV digibox and an 80cm dish (modified with multiple LNB's) and manual LNB switch

While I could get it to work (after a fashion) with Hotbird/Astra 1 I soon got fed up with its limitations and upgraded to a Lidl FTA reciever (Comag SL55)

The FTV digibox got passed to some grateful family members living down South so that they could enjoy proper reception of UK terrestrials.

A couple of people are now trying to persuade me to ditch the Lidl box (or pass it on to other televisually deprived relations) and go for a "proper grown up" FTA reciever

Even on a Sky minidish It should be possible to pick up some stuff off Astra 1

The only thing more "grown up" is a dual Sat tuner 450G Byte Disk with DVD writer PVR with two separate motorised dishes!

Watty, any problems with the Nordic beams on Sirius 2/3?

    Sir2 HD Demo: 12.245, V, 27500, 7/8
    Sir3 Lithuanian TV2: 11843 H, 27500, 3/4

    Nope, don't get those.
About 30 channels, some feeds marked encrypted that arn't
Most recent found is 12303H SR 25547 82% level and 55% quality.

It's only a 80cm dish sold with Lidl analog boxes on the motor. I might try one of Tony's 1.1m if I have money in April. I think it is biggest safe size for Diseqc motor, esp. on as fast as Motek. A slower motor (more gears) can probabily go 1.4m

Bigger and you need actuators or 36V motors. But you knew that Zaphod (I'm thinking out loud for our other readers!)

It's a long way to Tipperary...

(and even further to Limerick from Scandinavia).

From Edinburg, Dundalk to Limerick the footprint falls very rapid. I'd guess it is fine on 80cm in Inverness.

I guessed as much but just wanted to check.

I think the OP may have a problem specifically with Latvian or Lithuanian language stuff on Sirius as they all appear to be on the Sirius 3 Nordic beam, so a larger dish would be required. Some are also encrypted.
