Dont know if anyone is interested but at 8pm on Thusday the 12th, yes this thursday, in MacNeill; SFSOC and Astronomy Ireland will be hosting a lecture given by Dr. Simon Singh on Big Bang - the history of the universe in 60 minutes

Dr. Singh will be on Pat Kenny Thurday morning, afaik, talking about this, if you dont catch that this is what he describes his lecture as:

Simon Singh, author of "Fermat's Last Theorem" and "The Code Book", talks
about his latest book, "Big Bang", a history of cosmology. As well as
explaining what the Big Bang theory actually is, Simon will recount how the
theory emerged and tell the story of the brilliant and eccentric scientists
who fought against the establishment idea of an eternal and unchanging
cosmos. He will also look at the astronomical evidence in favour of a Big
Bang moment of creation and discuss why today's cosmologists remain
confident that the Big Bang theory is an accurate description of the origin
and evolution of the universe. The lecture is likely to include Led
Zeppelin, the Teletubbies and an electrified gherkin.

Places are limited to 150 and it's free just turn up with your tcd student card at the door, and dont say SciFi never did anything for you!!!

well we aim to satisfy a variety of interests...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

    OC-related interests?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

the OC? jebus i wouldn't have thought that was remotely 'sci-fi' related.....

and whats wrong with doing some oc/lost stuff? we also show films/good guest speakers/nights out and have a vast library of scifi and non scifi books/dvds. and we have a ps2 and xbox360 with 2 tvs, 4 couchs and a speaker system with a new computer coming soon. so i think we cater to everyones interest and why shouldnt we.

thats fine - just change the name to the "EverythingSoc" and i'll be happy then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,225 ✭✭✭Chardee MacDennis

Why does a society have to do exactly what it is called and only that, that would mean DUBES would have to be called party soc or something. we've branched out and i dont think thats a bad thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

i concur, 'everything soc' is more appropratie, what kind of self-respecting sci-fi nerd would watch the oc in fairness?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,225 ✭✭✭Chardee MacDennis

well it is a more encompassing name, but SciFi it will stay...

I handled a/v for his lecture during science week, as well as all the other ones in the main theatre. He was one of the best, and one of the nicest. Recommend it.

that's because the hamilton library is a joke. It's utterly pointless. Ussher ftw.

well i prefer the lighting and it seems quieter, and for some reason i get more work done there.

    well for one,

    Bess girls....
your missing the point that thats a major downside when you actually wanna get some work done........ last time i ventured into one of the arts libraries to study whatever floor i was on the guy's were outnumbered by women about 8:1..... needless to say i spent most of the time looking around rather than working. And then there is the huge windows overlooking the cricket pitch...

i dunno 4 years of the hamilton, just put myself in a corner nothing new to notice so do some work...but thats just be i guess...

The lighting in the hamilton gives me a major headache - just cant work in there.

granted i'm in the usher at the mo and not working here either, but give it time, i only just woke up.

The lighting is infinitely better, bright natural light during the day and "peaceful" light at night; there are more floors to choose if any are busy/loud; seats are more comfortable; no trains; AND you can actually write with a pen as opposed to those damn tables in the Hamilton and Lecky.

Ussher 2/3/4 ftw. Fourth was very in last year, I'm a bit of a third-floor man myself this year. That said, I did venture up to 4 last night - and walked into a chair :D.

    Damn you Neil.

Yeah that was just funny - i hate having to try and not piss myself laughing in somewhere thats supposed to be quiet :)

Fantastic talk, Played Led Zeplin! electracuted a Gerkin, did a freeky sound project and discussed a rather intreasting theory that the Tellytubbies were evil

Hung around to sign books and photo's.

For a Lowly arts student like myself, He explained things and went ten minutes over time to ask questions.

    i really enjoyed it

    Fantastic talk

i disagree. he was entertaining il give him that. but all it he did was his stock lecture that has no actual relation to the big bang. it was closer to a history (with a bit of pop psychology thrown in for good measure in the led zeppelin thingy) lecture. dont get me wrong it was enjoyable but a bit childish and comical as apposed to being interesting or fantastic.
