Just looking for a little bit of feedback....any and all comments welcome.

    DSCF0294copy.jpg

    DSCF0287copy.jpg

    DSCF0250.jpg

My passion is cars (not german cars really, but it was a german car kinda day), hence the nature of all these pictures. That, and I havent really had much of a chance to go wandering since I got the camera. They were it's second day out.

edit: I realise the first shot is a little under exposed.....but didnt realise until I was looking at it on the computer screen

Not great photos really. And what's the point of the ugly copyright text?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 170 ✭✭Flipflip

Yeah I'd definately think about making that text a little smaller.

    Maybe not red either.

The pics aren't great to be honest.

A tighter crop on the second one would've made a big difference.

And gettin closer to the cars in the third wouldve been good too.

Sher, as they say, practise makes perfect.

Oh, and have a look at this guy, he's from waterford, he's a brilliant motorsport photographer.

    @fx

The point is that they are mine......hence the ugly (C) text

    You say not great...and I accept that.....they aren't really.....

How would you suggest they be improved?

    @flipflip.....yeah...i know the guy.....very talented.

    thanks for the suggestions.

Brendan - I was shocked when I saw the pics, over by the pond in Abbeyside, are you local?
I'm a local photographer (http://www.cianclarke.com). Anyway, your major let down is the big red text - it completely takes from the photos straight away.
Anyway, I love German cars - not VW's, but BMW's yes. That first shot has great potential, the only let down is the light and the poor exposure. The composition is fine, you'd just do better on a sunny day with the sun behind you, or if you could expose it right in the top right hand corner.
The second - if you came in closer to the car maybe, once again the poor light on the day is letting you down.
The third - once again potential, and what you have there is grand for a documentary type photo, to show others and the likes - but no great artistic merit. What sticks out for me straight away there is trying a photo standing to the right of the white VW in the foreground, and taking a pic' trying to include all the bonnets/grilles all the way along, might have been an interesting perspective.
Hope this was of some use. Wouldn't mind that black BMW in the third pic!

First one looks like it might be a little out of focus, it's quite dark too. If you're serious about it a tripod could help for that kind of shot, longer shutter speed and can give you a crisper picture.

The second one looks a bit more like a landscape shot with a car in it, rather than the other way around, and ends up looking a bit odd as a result.

The last one has a lot of flare in the top left as a result of shooting too close towards the sun, keep an ete out for that.

TBH, it's not just the red text. Anyone can take a picture of a car, why don't you get up close, and take one from an angle noone else can see.

Paddy (Cosworth) is a good mate of mine, and takes some of the best car pic's I've seen.

    @CianClarke
I'm Waterford city myself, but we ended up down that way on the run that day. I had no say in where we pulled in so took what I could.

Re: the first shot......it was getting late, the light was fading
the second.....taken at the same time....seems the consensus is closer is better...though I wanted more of the background in it when I was taking it, prehaps further out?

as for the third, I would have taken your suggestion, but unfortunately the sun was in the wrong place in the sky, as randombassist has pointed out.

@randombassist.....i was using a tripod, but for the first picture i wanted the camera right at the ground, not 12 - 18" above it. Any suggestions for holding it still while at ground level, but angled upwards (obviously I don't want to get my camera scratched and damaged so I was doing my best to hold it still at a low shutter speed and slightly above the ground (1/13))

@all.....in future the (C) text shall be much smaller and less intrusive....thanks :D

yeah, lay it on the ground, and put something under the lens to hold it up.

works wonders. give it a shot next time.

a small tripod might work too. I have two very small tripods, only about 5 inches high like.

Stone under the lens job - or use a jumper/jacket :)

Thought I posted that a few secs ago but never came up

I quite like the 1st picture I have to say.
The other two dont do much for me.

I'd have to agree with what people are
saying about the text. Of course you
dont have to listen :) its your choice.
You can always keep it the same size.
I like to have the text big enough but not
take from the actual picture, try make the
text the same colour as something in the
    picture.

Here's an example of what I mean, see
how the line is the same colour.. Photo

Keep it up and post more :)
    Nice 1st pic

Thanks...I'll definitely be changing the font to something less intrusive (2005 is over now so I wont be using that batch anymore anyway).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Actually - Hows about using a small black frame, and just keeping your (c) in that?

    Just a suggestion anyways!

Did you take the shot of the TVR? Thats pretty decent and is one of my Fav cars ever.

What camera and settings are you using for the cars shots?

If you support it with something as was suggested and then turn the timer setting on.That way you won't get cam-shake when you press the shutter.

I wish I took the one of the TVR.....if you look very very closely the originating website address has been left in the image.

I'm using a fuji s9500. For the above shots I was using "M" mode, which gives control over shutter speed and aperture, and a lot more in the menu, but they were all left at the defaults.

Given the low light the shutter speed was fairly slow and I had the aperature set as wide as possible.

1/13 @ f3.7 for the first picture, 1/6 @f3.6 for the second (both at ISO200 aswell apparently). Pretty certian it was in auto mode for the 3rd pic, but 1/300 @f3.7

If you took the ugly car out of the frame, they'd still be crap. I think this thread belongs in the Motor fourm, bth.

It was posted here because I wanted feedback on the pictures, not on the car.

Ok, the photos are made very ugly by the presence of the car/s.
    Better?

See if your camera can shoot at a higher ISO... that would help with low light shots.

How about a topless blonde draped across the bonnet as appears to be the fashion in the car magazines? Probably a bit difficult to get one to pose in the Comeraghs in winter though. :)

A quick bit of photoshopping would also be good - increase the brightness and contrast of the pics a bit and your photos would be more dramatic. Getting closer to the cars and using a wider angle lens would give you a sharper angle of perspective.
