A report from the Joint Communications Board on the availability of internet access in Galway City has projected that broadband will be available in all areas of Galway City in time for the forthcoming 550th anniversary of the founding of Galway City.

Speaking to the Galway City Trumpet over the weekend, engineering manager Seamus Magner has praised the report, and said that this is justification for any future works in Eyre Square that may need to be carried out to fulfil this projection. “To begin with, the project will require the installation of a number of 12 metre satellite dishes on a 30 metre-high mast in the middle of Eyre Square, to ensure wireless coverage for both sides of the city”, he said. “Once the fibre optic cable is installed from there down through Shop Street to the Claddagh, we can hook up to the giant telecoms interconnector in the Atlantic. Of course, this will require the closure of some areas of the city centre for a year or so, but it will be worth it. I am confident that the works will be complete in time for the anniversary celebrations.”

The 550th celebrations are due to begin on the 1st January 2034.
