I have a 'virus' on my computer . Basically it is one of those dialler viruses which caused computer to dial through a premium rate number as i found out to my cost one day .

Everytime I am on the internet now , a pop screen comes up directing me to click on a site / games site and if I do I will be connected via a premium rate number. When I close this pop up window it causes an error and Internet Explorer crashes.

I found the program on the add / remove programs list but cannot remove it as , it needs to connect to its website to get the unstall part of its program.

Is there any way I can get rid of this as its now a bit of a nusiance?

    Try

    AVG Free Anti Virus Program
    Ad-Aware Spyware Removal Program
    Spybot S&D Spyware Removal Program
    Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware

You might also want to provide some details, e.g. the name of the program, to get a more specific answer.

(I am also assuming that since you can post here you can download these programs via a different machine.)

    start pc in safemode...
    1. Restart the computer.
Some computers have a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS. Others may not let you know what is happening.
    2. As soon as the BIOS loads, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. If this happens, restart the computer and try again.
    3. Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, select Safe mode and then press Enter.

right now in safe mode, goto start run and type in msconfig

clear the load startup items check box, okay all and restart pc as normal

    that should do you,

nowrun your antivirus( or install a good antivirus and then run) , go online and update antivirus fully, run a full scan and remove everything

install adware, update it fully and run a full scan remove everything again

now if you want go back to your msconfig and enable your startup items again (actully you dont really need them so only do that if your missing something)

When your in safe mode what exactly does this mean and how will the above remove the virus / unwanted program from the computer

ha ha, its impossibal to remove a virus if its running in the background, booting in safe mode should stop it loading when you boot up your pc

next msconfig... clearing the startup items will stop your pc running all you background programs, then you can reboot into normal windows and run all your scanners to clean the pc out

if you just run msconfig and the virus is running in the background it will juat add its self back to the startup list instantly

ublinia, you got some great advice there.

If you can't follow the instructions (not everyone is a computer whizz, so there's nothing wrong with that) and it's a laptop and you can make it into Dublin City Centre, I'd be happy to remove the virus for you (for free, I understand the pain of having a virus on a computer.)

But do try to follow the above instructions step by step.

Also, do download the following (do a google search for them) -
    AVG Free Anti Virus Program
    Ad-Aware Spyware Removal Program
    Spybot S&D Spyware Removal Program
    Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware

    - and don't forget to UPDATE them (there will be an option for that) before running them...

Also, if you are a computer novice, stop using IE and start using Firefox.
