Ok first up, hello all I'm new to this forum and racing/betting, started having a few bets after xmas on paddy power web site after a conversation with a mate. Started with a few small win and e/w bets, won some lost some great fun even without knowing any thing about form and the like.

Mate was telling me about placepots and quadpots so I check out the quadpot on the PP site on jan 6 put a minimum bet(€1.49) @ Towcester and one @ Wolverhampton, I win on the first one €177.55...sweet. I've been doing them off and on since always min stake, won at Newcastle today €12.04 so I'm wondering how come such a big difference in amounts. I get that it's a betting pool but I didn't pick any out of the top 2/3 favs in each race( i think) so the difference seems pretty extreme. So if anyone can clue me in I'd be much obliged

In the 4 quadpot races at Newcastle today, the favourite was placed in 3 of them and while the favourite was unplaced in the other one, both the 2nd and 3rd favourites were placed. Generally, most people who do placepots/quadpots would include the favourite (or others close to being favourite) in their selection(s). Therefore, lots of people would have won that quadpot today and the so pool is divided up between more people, resulting in a low dividend.

It's hard luck on your part that you managed to pick decent priced horses that got placed along with all those favourites. The ideal scenario is when you pick relatively unfancied horses that get into a place and the favourites all disappoint and finish out of the frame. That's when you get the big paydays like you had at Towcester before.

Also, welcome to the forum. There are some knowledgeable sorts around here from whom you can learn a lot.

So do you reckon quad/placepots are generally a waste of time and to stick to win/place etc?

Not necessarily. With some solid race study, I'm sure you can profit from quad/placepots. And for the fun-seekers, the bet gives you an interest in all 4 or 6 races.

I stick to win bets myself (and sometimes place) because it's not often I'd have the time and inclination to study all 6 races, barring the bigger meetings of course (such as the Cheltenham Festival where there are often nice placepot returns).

I wouldn't advise that you give them up. The more races you study and watch, the more you'll learn about the game. Keep going as you are - avoid picking favourites whenever you can and keep stakes small while you learn.

And as Crumbs says, no matter what your betting inclination is, Cheltenham, every March, is a must for placepot users. The payout is always pretty big and the places are rarely that hard to find at least one. Looking back at one of mine from last year I see the likes of Racing Demon, De Soto, and other horses that were either mentioned on this forum, or, had fair shouts to be fancied.
