    A digitized TV picture is to be transmitted from a source that uses a matrix of 1280 x 1024 pixels. Each pixel's intensity is one of 64 possible values. Assume 25 frames are transmitted per sec. The link to the destination consists of a 4.5MHz channel, where the signal-to-noise ratio is 35 db. Will the channel be able to carry the transmission?

    right, work out the datarate and work out the channel capacity. Simple.

    have the channel capacity but from the one tutorial example I have, i can't figure the datarate.

    the eg I have has a matrix of 480x500, 32 possible values, 30fps.
    the answer we got is
    (12*10^5 bits)*30 == 36*10^6

    wish the calculator would work right at times. fs. I need sleep..

    where'd the 12 come from? :confused:

    just need to figure that out.

    next question has a matrix of 1024*768, 8 values, 25 fps.

    channel capacity is the same for all with 4.5Mhz and 35db S/N.

    Any nudge in the right thinking is much appreciated. :)

    Damn right! Remember, although ComSys people are everywhere here, is is not a ComSys board, this is the UL board!

    Theres as much room for this thread as there is for someone asking about magic mushroom shops.

    Excuse me! your course may be only an "IT" course but real courses (engineering) are so much more than that.

    All this aside if the TV picture is at 1280x1024 then your laughing, if not change the channel...:v:

    the eg I have has a matrix of 480x500, 32 possible values, 30fps.
    the answer we got is
    Code:
    (12*10^5 bits)*30 == 36*10^6[or 10^7 when done correctly.]

    where'd the 12 come from?

    just need to figure that out.

    the 12 came from:

    480x500=no of pixels per frame=240,000
    each pixel can be one of 32 possible values. 32 is 2^5.

    240,000 * 5 = 12*10^5. QED.
