    Hi all,
I thought I'd try and oc my PC a little the other night but I ran into some problems. Basically I made some changes in the BIOS. I changed the processor value from 133 to 166 (I assume that refers to the FSB) and I also changed the RAM settings to TURBO.
When I rebooted the PC would not go past the splash screen for the mobo (Matsonic MS8172C). After freaking out for a while I consulted the manual and changed a jumper setting to the 166Mhz setting on the mobo. The PC then rebooted (phew!) but said it was resetting the values to default. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Should I leave well enough alone as I'm planning on rebuilding from scratch in a couple of months anyway?
    Thanks.

Unless you have an insanely overclockable system overclocking is a far more incremental process than you have just tried.

Increasing the FSB from 133 standard to 166 overclocked is well beyond what most CPU's are able to take. There have been a few exceptions where chips will run perfectly at a higher standard FSB but not many. The FSB, core voltage and multiplier contribute to what speed your CPU will run with stability at.

As for the Turbo settings on your RAM, these may be above what your RAM is capible of too. The quality of the RAM will determine what timings and speeds it is capible of.

    To overclock your PC:

Step 1 - Reset the settings to their orginal non-overclocked values
Step 2 - Look online for typical overclocking increases for your hardware (or post more details here)
Step 3 - Incrementally increase the settings testing for stability.

    Thanks leeroybrown.
It sounds more trouble than its worth. The only reason I was trying was cos my pc is not doing F.E.A.R much justice. I'm happy otherwise though. Reckon I'll just rebuild in a couple of months. Thanks again.

F.E.A.R. dosen't like overclocked systems anyway. Some computer games don't. I was gettin' artefacts and crashes back to windows when I played FEAR and had me rig oc'd and it was fine on all me other games and passed Prime95 for 12 hours.

If you haven't got a lotta patience and don't know much about your hardware, then don't overclock.
