Anyone fight southpaw?

Well you see - I'm right handed and left legged. It helps more for my kicks.. initally when I started off I'd try jab and throw a close hook with my right hand but I never liked it. If I fight orthadox and lead with my left hand I can box 10 times better but I don't get the distance to generate any real power when I kick with my left leg. It's weird, I'm half and half - I don't know anyone like this.

Should I lead with my left hand so that my boxing is better and work on kicking more efficiently on both legs or lead with my right hand, and work on it so I can make use of it's power when leading and have a strong left kick.

    Any ideas?

It'd depend on what you're doing... we alternate rythmically so I'd say whichever is most comfortable then certainly lead with that side and kick off the back leg. You'd get some fantastic strength in a jab people would expect to be from your off hand and then a nice kick afterwards.

Rock them with the arm and drop them with a harsh kick from the back leg?

i'd say keep your stance to work best for your striking.

you can get your legs to work for you to suit as you go.

dlofnep, do you not train to fight on both sides equally? I mean theres no reason why you cant be just as good leading with your right as when you lead with your left.

And GOD Im so thick...I only just realised what your name is :o

I do Dave. Still, I think one side might be beneficial over the other. Truth be told though, you're right. I should be fluent on both accords.

LOL, don't worry about it. I have people who I've had on my messenger list for 5 years who still don't know.

Simple way to look at it.....when you train and you spar you tweak your good points and you improve on your weak points.

If you find that you box better with leading with the left leg but your weak with the kicks or knees then stick with it and see if you can improve and dont stop until you have it!!

I'd be inclined to see how it incorporates into your whole game. Do you shoot from a south paw or orthodox stance.

By and large I find my Boxing and shoots are more important than my kicking and as such I would find them more important.

That said I can fight either south paw or orhtodox. I've neglected my south paw side of late but between now and the summer I'm going ot work on that. Your body will respond to what ever you make it do. So just pick a side and do it man.

    Peace

I shoot from south paw.. I find it much easier.

I'm right handed & left footed too, I see it as an advantage. I prefer to be in an orthodox lead & I've just worked hard on my rear kick.

I've found it more comfortable & better for blocking opponents kicks (most opponents are right footed so I'm blocking their strongest leg with my strongest leg), I also think I get better lead leg knees because I'm left footed.

I probably shoot more from southpaw than orthtodox myself, I find it a easier too ..... wonder why that is?

No idea.. Sometimes I get confused with some things when I change back to orthodox.. It's like my brain can't read it properly. Must be the contrast in opposite sides?

Shoots ALWAYS work better when you are mirroring i.e. orthodox shooting on orthodox etc. Of course train anything enough and that wont matter.

    Peace

Yeah I agree.. I know if I did put the time into my stand-up and wrestling on both sides, I might not have so many problems.. I think that's the problem right there.

i´ld say def lead with your left so your boxing is better. because, from what i´ve found:

1.kicks are most effective in mma when your opponent is backing up (less danger of him spoiling your kick)
2.when kicking off the lead leg (your good leg, here) the step beforehand, to set up, is v important. it has to be big enough to put you in the right position to launch the kick ie it almost changes what side is forward. this step can telegraph, so the step needs to be desguised..
3.leading with a punch combo (jab cross being simple and effective) to get your opponent backing up then taking your set up step will hide your set up and put you in a good position to throw the kick.
The only problem is that this might make your stand up a bit one dimensional. you could very it with some straight long knees.

OR of course you could kick the bag for half an hour every day and you will have perfect kicks on both sides .. but do you want to take that much time away from other aspects of your training.:(

Shoot from the stance you have in boxing. If your fighting orthodox and then change to southpaw to shoot it is EXTREMELY telegraphic and will be much easier for your opp to defend against.
