(Dam I miss the days of roller-ball mice)

Ok, here's my problem. About a year ago, my final roller-ball, serial port mouse had to be pitched because years of dirt and cleaning of the parts had caught up with it.

And I started using the USB/optical mice instead.

There was one I had at that time, started using it, everything was ok for a while, then it started intermittently ceasing up, moving in wierd directions and so on. It got to the point where some things, like gaming, became too frustrating bordering on impossible.

So I chucked that mouse and bought a new optical mouse, different brand. Again all worked fine for a little while, till again the mouse started acting up, intermittently ceasing to function and going in weird directions, now it's getting worse.

One major problem I've been having is where the mouse sends the cursor off to a corner of the screen, and tries to keep moving it further.
In my favourite PC game (which has the viewing angle controlled by the mouse) the view starts spinning around as though I'd been mowing the mouse upwards-left diagonally at full speed (when it's perfectly still)

Anyone know how this happens? Are some optical mice dodgy in this respect or is it just a case of "they don't make 'em like they used to?"

I had similar trouble, turned out to be a silvery mousemat that must have caused odd reflections. I now use a sheet of white paper with no problems, give it a go to rule it out.

Yeah, my mousemat is very shiney. I'll try it with something else.

    Thanks
