BSOD at logon

    i'm trying to fix someone's computer. it almost gets to the window that lists the users, then blue screens and gives a memory dump. the only file named is amon.sys. googling that and the hex memory locations got me nowhere. i've tried repairing the installation so that means to me its probably a hardware problem. unless someone wants to correct me?


    i swapped the ram from my computer so thats not the problem

    and it can boot in safe mode

    running xp home sp2

    dell dimension 4400

    Disable startup items?
    Dsconnect additional hardware to determine if it's a driver issue...
    check for updated drivers..

    A quick google suggests amon.sys = spyware or AV software (NOD32) issue...
    run a full scan,in safe mode, for spyware and viruses (Update the app's first)

    i can't feckin believe it was that simple. thanks karoma. from now on instead of asking nicely if they've installed any programs recently, i'm going to smack them on the head until they tell me. what a waste of two hours repairing the installation and backing up files. still tho, she's goin to pay me :D and for your help you can have a shiny penny karoma.
