Nice offering for free, shame about Norton tho.
    Google Pack is:
    # Essential: Enjoy safe, useful software for your computer
    # Simple: Download and install everything in just a few clicks
    # Customizable: Choose only the software you want
    # Up to date: Get updates and new software via Google Updater
    # Learn more
    System Requirements
    # Windows XP with Administrator privileges (What's this?)
    # Firefox 1.0+ or Internet Explorer 6.0+

It doesn't do a much better job than the free antivirus programs. And it's a complete system hog. And if you have any other AV installed it messy. And it's a complete pig to uninstall.

Some people find it useful and you can uninstall it easily enough.

I use Norton, never realised it was that bad. What would you recommend as an alternative. What are your views on AVG?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,396 ✭✭✭✭Karoma

    AVG Free rocks. :)

Others seem to like Avast! - I've never tried it.
(And if you're removing NIS (i.e. Firewall as well) - be sure to replace the firewall too..)
Just Search these forums for more views as this has been discussed numerous times.

Well Norton gave me huge problems when installing Google Pack - frankly it only partially installed and then completely freezed up my computer. After numerous restarts (all of which resulted in Windows freezing as soon as Norton services began), I fixed the problem by restarting in Safe Mode, going into to:

Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Services

and selected every Service that had to do with Norton and Symantec (about 6) and selected Properties -> Disable.

Restarted, removed 3 Norton apps from "Add/Remove Products" and everything fine now, but beware of Norton...

You may also want to download and run the Norton Removal Tool - Norton will have left traces ...

Is the google pack free? I read that the Norton Antivirus 2005 Special Edition* is giving 6months free protection that pretty good as that usually retails for over €40 or more. How big is the google pack in Mbs? And has anybody downloaded it yet? I take it many people don't like Norton I have it myself along with Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware SE Personal and I find that Norton keeps the viruses at bay while those two zap and Spyware or Adware I encounter. I also use Eircom Email Protector to keep spam to a minimum.

i don't really see the purpose in this Google Pack! is it just a load of programs lumped together, what is so wonderful about that? i could put those programs into one big installer package just as easily as Google has done and make it available as well*

The majority of those programs are available for free, actually all are excety they offer you an amazing offer on one of the worst AV programs. Is this targeted at people who don't have a clue what programs they need for their PC's or am i just missing something?

    * i know i would need a licence

Can't imagine microsoft being too happy with this. A long way from being an OS but a start of a take over battle for the users desktop me thinks.

I think its a great idea. I quite often help people set up new computers and this will make it easier. I think they should add loads of other usefull programs in there...I don't like norton either, maybe AVG would be a better replacement

Smaller than an Adobe patch and much better with corrupt docs.

Actually, on first impression it seems a little more like a limp wristed response to OneCare on Windows Live, a group of programs designed to make the average user feel safe with some proprietary Google software in there to keep the image as well as give the user some new toys. I'm surprised Google Talk isn't on by default to try to kill MSN, and I'm not sure is Trillian bundled because people find it useful, or because its some kind of way to look like they enjoy competition. If I was a cynical person...

Finally, no Java? This kind of distribution system from a company with this kind of public image is something I thought Sun would kill for, their packaging licenses be damned.

Yep, in a few years everyone will hate google... actually a lot of people already do.
Think I'll start using those search engines they put on domain squatter sites... that'll be the next big thing tbh.
