Give people a while to get back, Sunday is a slow day.

I presume your grandfather has raised this with his doctor?

Its caused by very rich foods, red wine, chinese food. im not totaly sure but some acid(that is present in the foods suggested) that is responsible for irritating the joints in the foot, thats what causes gout.

many foodstuffs should be avoided esp red meat and alcohol.

Your grandad has my sympathy!! My dad suffers from gout, and it is incredibly painful and debilitating!!

Obviously you should advise your grandad of his diet and drinking habbits for future reference...but at the moment there isn't a lot you can do other than take the prescribed medication, and on top of that my dad would take Nuerofen extra strength...but you should consult a doctor about taking over the counter medication whilst already on perscribed medication...especially if you're dealing with painkillers...

I would suggest going to the hospital..if he is in immense pain they may take him in and put him on a drip..this will be the most effective treatment for the actual gout itself aswell as killing the pain...

    Best of luck

Thanx for your reply unfortunately my grandmother is currently in hospital and my grandad refuses to leave the house un-occupied due to the house next door getting robbed and vandalised (In a well to-do area too). Also I have passed on the advice about consulting the doctor about using nurofen thanx again.

My father had very bad gout, so I'll give a personal example of how it went for him (excuse some spellings etc. - I was told this and saw it, not read it somewhere.)

He did the medication thing - which didn't do much good, so my mother took over proceedings.

Gout is caused by too much Uric acid in the system which gathers in joints and causes severe pain. Food stuffs which contain Purine (Spelling) cause Uric acid. All humans have Uric acid, when your body makes too much (from the purine foods) you get Gout.

My mother checked on the worst foods and banned them, they are -

    1. Guinness (really hurt him, he's old school, loves the stuff)
    2. Red meat (only a small portion once a week - as opposed to two portions a day)
    3. No tomatoes - ever (or tomatoe based products)
    4. There were some other foods (can't think of them now, that he just cut down on - no big sacrifice)

Also, he had to bring a 2 litre bottle of water to work every day and drink it all before he arrived home - then she'd still fill him with water at dinner and in the evening.... This flushed out the crap from his system (including the uric acid). He used to have a cup of tea in the middle of the day and nothing else to drink until she asked him, like I said, Old School.....

Also, he takes a drop or two of devils claw every day in a glass of water to help counteract the problem....

The results have been brilliant. He has only had one flare up in the last year. That was after my sisters graduation when he had a feed of Guinness to celebrate and a ham sandwiche - has ankle swelled up at the weekend and was gone by the Monday. Other than that it's been all clear for him....

Just see which foods/bad habits your grandfather is indulging that are causing this and just cut them out - worked great for my Pop - the medication was useless by the way........

I can personally sympathise, this isn't an old person's problem I've had it for years since I was a teenager (35 now).

I don't drink a lot, and hardly ever red wine, don't eat much dairy or red meat. Just my system is prone to gout. One of those things.

It is surprising, but the main trigger for me seems to be Pepsi Cola. It was something I only drank a lot of at Christmas and that's when I'd get an attack. I've tested it and it seems to be a cause of it for me.

So, this year, no Pepsi and no Gout attack.

Coke is fine! Which is a surprise.

I'd return to the doctor and tell him to do his job. Pain like gout should not be acceptable.

Gout is not a rich person's disease.Like the other subscribers here it is extremely painful, in fact, the worst pain I have ever experiences.
I have attend the doctor and hospital.
I take Alipurinol - a tablet each day. I did take other prescription drugs but they didn't work. I also bought a bottle of Devils Claw from a Health Food shop.
I am careful with what Alcohol I drink, though I am very partial to a pint or 5 of Guinness.
I don't eat Indian, Chinese or other spicy foods.
Unfortunately, some of us have difficulty getting rid of our Uric Acid through natural means.
