So you are going to take the plunge and head down to Melbourne?

I was there this time last year and found it to be a very lively city. I bounced around Australia for a while and ended up in Melbourne twice because of the craic I was having there. There's a great mix of people, which adds to the vitality of the place. I am use to living in big cities so it was a nice surprise to be able to walk around the CBD at 4 a.m. with nobody hassling you, even though the whole city is drunk.

Melbourne has a lively restaurant scene with a great selection of far east foods. What's also cool about the place is the fact that it's a coastal city, so there are some brilliant coastal drives, towns and beaches nearby.

There seems to be always something going on there, which led to a severe case of lack of sleep. One Sunday morning I ended up going to the Grand Prix (no problem buying a ticket at the gate), spent the rest of the day hanging around St. Kilda's beach district and spent the night in one of their fabulous casino hotels (which had a choice of about 6 different clubs, and some were free to get in). I must admit though that it was handy having a guide show me around the place, so if you could hook up with someone down there to get you started, that would be helpful.

So there you go .... a positive experience overall. Definitely would go back for more.

Here are a few reasons why Melbourne beats Sydney...
    • It is the cultural capital
    • It is the culinary capital
    • It is the home of footy
    • There are less traffic jams
    • It is where the best beer is brewed!
I am sure there are lots more...

Hey dSTAR, how are you going maaaate? LOL

I agree with the above things EXCEPT that Sydney beats Melbourne hands down in the weather stakes....although I am sure Melbourne on a Winter's day is not dissimilar to Ireland/England.... ;)

Another good thing about Melbourne is that there are some great wineries near and around the area.....but then again Sydney has the Hunter Valley.....and better beaches......

Anyway, I am not helping the cause here......:-)

But you can definitely get the best gelato and suvlaki in Melbourne...... :-)

Good luck with that. I'm sure the 'Dept of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs' won't make it difficult at all.

    Is that the online one?

    And don't forget your pledge:

From this time forward, under God*,
I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people,
    whose Democratic beliefs I share,
whose rights and liberties I respect,
and whose laws I will uphold and obey.

    *God being optional!
