    Read Muso's sticky.
Play some live freeroll tournaments, (I think) all the card clubs have them, Merrion, Fitz, Macau in Cork.
Lodged €50 onto a poker site of your choice, play some €5 single table tournaments.
Read some books (search these forums for some recommended ones).

    Enjoy!

    Powerhousedan,

As quickly as possible, learn to play a type of poker called "pot limit omaha" and play in what are called "cash games" instead of tournaments. Too many young and beginning players make the mistake of only playing No Limit Holdem tournaments like they see on TV, and never become well rounded poker players.

Lafortezza also gave some good advice.

And the quickly go down to RoundTower's game with enough money to cover the table. Too many newbies don't sit down with enough money, :p About right RoundTower??

As well as this solid advice, and on top of reading books, keep posting on this forum and other Poker forums with questions and hand histories...

I'm only playing about 2 months now. I only play online but I'm planning on going to Fitz some time as I live about 5 minutes walk from it. The best thing to do online is tournaments. You risk a set amount to win a lot more.

I was in the $100k Ladbrokes weekly tournament on Saturday ($15k for the winner). Its free to enter with 500 raked hands from the previous week. I went from about 4,000 chips to 220 after going all in when the average stack was about 2,500. I just went all in again on the following hand with the 220 and I won the hand getting up 2 over 700. I waiting for a half decent hand and went all in again and got up to over 2,500. I eventually made it up to 1st in the leaderboard with 32,000 chips and I was in the top 4 for ages. Most people were playing safe to get in the 200 and win some money so I just kept going and robbing the blinds. At most 1 person would call.

I had a bad run and ended up 88th and won $250. I would have taken that at the start but I was disappointed after falling from so high up.

I've got about 3 books and they have helped a lot. I have the Poker Tracker software but its very complicated to learn from so I'll have to read the manual on that. Anyway, practice is the main way to go. I think you learn more from a 10c/20c table than entering freeroles. Just start low and when you are constantly making profit go up the next step.

You only have to play 500 raked hands on Ladbrokes to enter a weekly 100k freeroll?! Is this true?

Seriously doubt it. Probably allows you to enter a satellite to the 100k gtd. I'd say....

Although I don't know. If this is the case I'll be playing on Ladbrokes tonight..

Yep. Top 200 places paid ($150 minimum) and there was less than 1,000 in Saturday's.

    https://www.ladbrokespoker.com/features/promotions/?subsection=Promotions

    # Play 500 raked hands in a week for your chance to share in $100,000 of cash prizes in the Weekly Raked Hands Freeroll. With a first prize of $15,000 and 200 places paying at least $150, there is only one Poker Room to be seen at in January.
    # The tournament is held each Saturday at 18:05 GMT.

They only started with the cash prizes this month I think though.
Up to now it was cruise tickets and entry into the cruise weekly final as prizes.

That's brilliant. Any idea what counts as a raked hand. Couldn't see it in the T&C's on the link, but only had a quick look. Busy Busy little bee....

Can't remember off the top off my head exactly how much rake is needed for it to count as a raked hand. Will check tonight at home.

Amaru and Ste05 (and anyone esle!), if ye're setting up Ladbrokes, accounts make sure and PM email addresses for referrals for free money!! ;)

I'll call that too since I brought it up. ;)

What kind of stakes do you have to be playing to rake .25c?

I thought it was either 50c/1 or 1/2. I'm not sure. but judging by the piece I quoted it could be 25/50c.
