Brown Island, Carrigtwohill early this morning. Original in RAW format, converted in RSE and finished in CS2. Canon EOS 20D, Tamron 17-35. 1/125sec f/5.6.

Nice .. i like the balance, with the bird on one side and the island on the other

It's very nice, but I think a longer exposure would have made for a much nicer finish on the water.

A longer exposure would have blurred the birds and I was anxious to have them distinct. For example, see attached photo I took earlier in the session at an exposure of 1/5th sec.

    I prefer the Original.

Amazing shot, The colours are so real looking. When you say you finished it in CS2, what did you do?

Im going to start shooting in RAW soon, Is there any good tutorials/webpages that go through the process, including the basics? Im still learning how to fully use my 350D.

    Thanks

it's very common practice to take two photos and combine them, to get the desired effect. Usually don't for exposure correction. For example it's an over cast day and u take a photo of a car but the sky is washed out, then what u do is that another photo with different metering setting to get the correct sky exposure.

Download Raw Shooter Essentials from www.pixmantec.com. It's free. Using it is pretty intuitive really so just play around with it until you get the results you like. And even though CS2 can open RAW files I prefer to use RSE. In Photoshop CS2 I tweaked the levels and saturation a wee bit and applied some very slight curves adjustments. (Curves is a Photoshop tool that is not available in the stripped down Photoshop Elements as far as I know. For my money it is indispensable in giving the finished shot that extra bit of pizzazz). I sharpened it using Unsharp Mask. I then used the Save For Web option to give me the best possible quality compatible with the small file size preferred by Boards.ie. I would suggest that you purchase Digital Photo magazine every month. It comes with a very good cover disc with some excellent Photoshop tutorials. There is also some very good stuff at: http://www.luminous-landscape.com

Lovely photo. I drove past that spot one morning last month and there was a really spectacular sunrise but I didn't have my camera with me. I was gutted.

You captured a nice moment there with the birds in flight like they've all just woken up. Lovely.

2 really great shots. The second one does have a better exposure on it but the birds in the first one look excellent.Fair play.

Was there any filters used on it?

Thanks to all for the feedback. In response to paddylonglegs, no filters were used, just very slight increased saturation in Photoshop. What you see is as near as possible to what the scene was like in reality.
