Bike Touring

    I recall some posters on this board mentioning they had done/intend to do some touring so I'd appreciate any advice anyone could offer me.

    I've never been touring on a bike properly, though I'm pretty fit and experienced on a bike, so any advice is good. Some general queries:
    • What kind of distance per day is normal? What should I be capable of before setting out?
    • Any particular bike problems to concentrate on preventing/to able to repair? Any particular parts to recommend?
    • Any particular clothing or pannier/baggage recommendations?
    • Maps, books, suchlike?

    Any advice other than those topics would be appreciated too - quirks of particular countries etc. Funny/scary stories wouldn't hurt either. :)
