Has anyone seen this yet? I watched it tonight, and it just jujstifies my hatred of Ang Lee. My god, I've never been so bored in my entire life. And I honestly can't believe this film is tipped for oscars in any category. The acting was terrible. I'm a big fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, but I thought he was atrocious in this. And Heath Ledger, should by no means be in consideration for best actor.

Ang Lee is an over-rated director. Using amazing scenary does not out do weak foreground direction. And the actors themselves seemed pretty unconvincing, especially in their first intimate encounter. It just doesn't make sense as to why they suddenly "get it on"!

The sound was terrible as well. When the rustling of a paper bag is louder than the dialogue, then you've got a problem! And it kept occuring throughout the film. The sound effects were to loud and drowned out the important parts.

I was looking at the various areas that this is to be nominated in, and it really doesn't deserve anything. It really comes off as a bad made for tv film and it upsets me that I wasted time on it, even after I was looking forward to it so much. I'm sorry if I'm rantign, I'm drunk now and probably just blowing things out of preportion, but at the moment this is how I feel about this sh1tty film!

Have you enjoyed any of Ang Lee's films? I'll give you Hulk as being rubbish, Ride With the Devil as being boring and average and that Crouching Tiger is a little over-rated.

The only Ang Lee film i enjoyed was 'The Ice Storm'.... period!

Not at all interested in seeing 'Brokeback Mountain'

this is a film to take the ladyfriend to. not something i'd ever consider going to as sheer entertainment.

and if jake gyllenhaal sucks in this, my god he redeems himself in the TRAILER alone for jarhead. that film looks great

I was quite upset, because I thought we were going to watch Jarhead :( Man did I get it wrong! I generally like jake gyllenhaal. He has some pretty good moments in films, but in this I just couldn't take him. And it didn't help that I couldn't understand a thing they said with their bizarre texas accents.

I really enjoyed The Wedding Banquet, Eat Drink Man Woman and Sense & Sensibility as well. Particularly Eat Drink Man Woman.

    Heh, reminds me of:

Eric Cartman: "Independent films are hippie movies about gay cowboys eating pudding." :p

The Oscars are a farce to be honest.
Most of the films nominated this year are plodding bores.

    Nominations aren't out yet...

...You're right though, it has been a shockingly poor year for movies*

*However - I loved this! In any other year though, this wouldn't be so hotly tipped for Oscar success - it's just that this year has been so ho-hum.

I also liked Hulk.. quite a bit actually. Great comic book film IMHO. Maybe not as entertaining (in the popcorn munching hollywood sense of the word) as XMen / Spiderman, but a better film I think.

Crouching Tiger was very good too -- even if it is only for the visuals.

Looking forward to Brokeback Mountain. It's not actually out here yet is it?

Yeah, it's out here Goodshape. Limited release (UGC, UCI, IFI) though! Wider release coming on 27th.

jees you mustve seen a different film. The one i saw was really well acted, and brilliantly directed - hes not trying to shove anything down your throat (maybe wrong use of phrase). Its demonstrates his subtlety and the visuals were great. It was maybe a little slow for some tastes but i was never bored,

ang lee is a quality director....

Crouching tiget hidden dragon is a classic...whoever said it was good just for the visuals obviously wasnt paying attention, what about the relationships? chow yun fat-michelle yeoh etc. the great acting? - michelle yeoh in particular, the amazing action - not every director can frame fight scenes so impressive - just ask quentin tarantino.
And Ride with the devil was great aswell i thought. Good performances from below-average actors (skeet ulrich? jewel?) and great drama...

I meant that even if you don't appreciate the rest, you'd have to admit the visuals were pretty stunning. Personally, I enjoyed the whole thing :)

    Trivia from imdb:

"According to producer James Schamus, the movie cost so little to make that it recouped its cost during its first week of limited release."

    :p

i'm a big fan of jake gylennhall (i must really learn how to spell that properly) and his sister..
i've been looking forward to this film.. but as usual, it can go either way with all the hype..

heath ledger..hmm.. i'll need some convincing after seeing "sin-eater" etc.

ps is there any cinema in cork showing it? is it on limited release or something?

The Oscar love films abot overcoming personally boundries and the sucess of the normal man/woman whatever.

Hence the nominations. As far as i'm concerned best actor should go to Kong. That big lug had me in tears!

Beautiful movie - subtle acting, well directed, great cinematography, and a moving story that made me think about it days later.

Loved the music too (must get the soundtrack).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not usually a low-brow-film kind of guy. I'm a sucker for a good emotional drama. But this movie just sucked, in my opinion.

I wasnt too impressed with the film at all, i understand where is the fuss is coming from but personally I felt it was long and repetitive. 3/4 of the way through the film I was thinking more about how sore my ass was then what was on the screen. Although I did enjoy the fact I could go to the toilet without fear of missing anything pivotal.

It all became clear why I didnt like it at the end....."directed by Ang Lee"
