Ya I believe they did a deal with O2 to cover their only flaw which was coverage. Now they seem better in every way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭azezil

Meteor are using o2's network infrastructure, ergo you'll get the same coverage on either network. Personally I rather stay with o2, didn't meteor have a blackout over the new year, seems to me o2 will drop them like a hot poker if their network is under load :)

Any reason? I changed to meteor ffrom 02 a few months back because they seem cheaper in every way and solved their coverage problem.
Is there any reason they are good still or is it laziness 'loyalty' as it was for me. It took ages for me to get off my as and change.

    Oh a sneak edit.
I guess there would be something in that sort of deal that says, oi you can't drop me biatch.

Not so.. I was in Cavan last weekend and had no signal for most of the time :( This wasn't a problem when I was still with O2. I tried selecting the O2 network manually (just out of curiosity) but got a message basically saying it couldn't changeover... unless I've missed something?

(That said though, Meteor is a lot cheaper/better than O2 imho)

Only if a pay-as-you-go customer, no?

It is so, they have the same coverage.
I don't know if it is only for pay as you go but I am pay as you go so quite possibly.

    Word of warning about o2:
If you are on a bill pay and change your package or ownership of the no. they sneak in an extra years contract(without the option of a new phone). I now have to pay 150 to leave the ****s.

If u text on line you get 350 texts fee to any number Its the same with o2 as far as i know

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,549 ✭✭✭scuba steve

Meteor are well better than o2, especially now that the coverage has been sorted out (in most parts of the country). Now and then you might get a lil problem with the network, but you can get that with every network. I hated being with o2, they were very expensive and didnt like their attitude towards customers (on customer care)

i've two meteor phones, one bill, one pay-as-you-go (don't ask, long story, bah humbug, nothing to do with meteor, just me...)

I've been with meteor pay-as-you-go since the beginning  [/me waits for loyalty perks...] but updated to the newer rates when they introduced them there last summer. with it you get free 085 texts for 30 days when you top up by €20 in one go. alternatively you can buy a text bundle of 100 texts for €7.50 (i.e. 5c per text) ...you can't have both free texts and a text bundle and if you sign up for a bundle your 085 texts are automatically deducted from your bundle (yes, i speak from experience ). also, you can only buy one text bundle in a month. text messages to other networks are normally 9c.

my bill phone contract is talk 200 - €40 per month including 200 minutes to any network and 60 text messages. afaik there's the option of buying a €7.50 add-on of either 3c calls or 5c texts, not 100 per cent certain about that, though. Text messages to other Meteor phones, outside your inclusive 60 texts, are charged as normal (9c).

30 free internet texts with pay-as-you-go; 300 texts and 30 group texts with bill pay.

have to say i think meteor is fairly ok now. at the beginning it was fairly shíte - coverage wasn't great except in cities, messages consistently failed to send, etc. - but it's alright now: I have full coverage, or almost-full coverage pretty much where ever I go, albeit I am living in a city.

Their deal with O2 is that if, on occasion, Meteor doesn't have reception, your phone automatically connects to the O2 network, and allows you to continue to have coverage on that. However, it can happen that neither O2 nor Meteor have coverage i.e. you're f*cked :D

A recent enough addition is that one can roam in GB automatically, without setting anything up. Pretty handy also.

    /me waits by letter-box for pay-cheque from Meteor...and me waits...and waits... :(

ya that really annoyed me. Then i moved to Vodafone, then kept my 097 number and switched to meteor and never regretted it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,549 ✭✭✭scuba steve

ya i was with them within a couple of months from them starting up but then i kinda rolled over my phone on a ride-on lawnmower by accident and kinda blew up the fone. But i went back to them!

ahh, i got a €99 3310 for christmas when they started in 2001. by god i couldn't use my phone for about 3 hours at either side of midnight on new year's eve. /me sighs in nostalgia.

in fact according to a guy on the mobiles forum, all his friends phones on o2 and voda died on the night and his meteor one worked

they give 300 on the net, same as voda. o2 gives 250 but they can be sent abroad

meteor have a similar bundle. o2 give 100 for €7.50, meteor gives 150 for the same. of course you have a choice of free meteor-meteor or 5c texts to all. you cant have both :)
nope, only get 30 with meteor on the internet a month, pay as you go anyway
you're about a year out of date there mate. check again

    meteor good points:
    really really cheap

    meteor bad points:
    coverage can occasionally be dodgy
    retarded customer care

i've learned to live with answering my own questions and the occasional dropped call :v:

    Meteor Pro's: loyalty credit
Meteor Con's: the f**king network never f**king worked to allow me to use the f**king credit!!!:mad::mad: Longest call would be 2 minutes, then it would cut me off, and there'd be no service for an hour or so, at times. Even when I was in Dublin city centre, ffs! And this is esp crap when a possible employer is talking to you, and the f**king meteor sh|t dies on you!

You get more then 30 texts online with Meteor.. didn't we have this in another thread before? Depending on which PAYG tarriff you're on, you get from 30-300 free webtexts.

O2 positive is international web texts. ..

As for coverage on NY Eve ... in Dublin (where the coverage problems tend to be on NY Eve) - Meteor have their own network. They only use O2 outside major cities where there's about 4 or 5 customers ... Meteor also disabled delivery reports for that night while o2 and vodafone proberly had thousands flying about ...

my apologies, i just logged into my PAYG account (anytime-plus) and I have 300 free webtext plus 30 group texts. I presume they've standardised all plans to have equal number of webtexts. Anyone else find it annoying that you can't send more characters than the equivilant of one text on the net - like you can't send a double message or whatever? it wrecks my head grrr

Also worth noting is the fact that meteor users can send call me's to people on any network, not just their own.
