updates should be stored in a temp folder on your hdd.

    or has that changed?

Also under installation status the cursor continues to blink with no sign of progress.

need more details, have you tried installing things one at a time? which update? Do you have SP2? Do you know what SP2 is? What computer?

Its obviously some sort of botched windows installation error, or another program interfering with the updates.

Could you answer more clearly? Is it SP2 its trying to install as an update? Or are you on SP2? You didn't answer any of the other questions.

As in try installing one update at a time (windows update allows you to do this).

So your problem seems to be with automatic updating. Windows update is a webpage you go to which detects what patches are/aren't installed, and lets you choose any optional stuff to install.

    go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Once there, click custom, then select updates one at a time, and it'll download and install them for you. You should hopefully find out which ones aren't installing correctly, giving you a clue as to the problem.

As a matter of probably ill founded interest would having firefox as my default browser be the problem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,002 ✭✭✭jay-me

When i try access the microsoft site using I.E the page freezes and no cpu is used?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,159 ✭✭✭✭astrofool

afaik firefox doesn't work right on windows update (firefox user say otherwise :))

Could be spyware, in which case, spybot (http://security.kolla.de) or ad-aware might help.

Just found this on a google.

    ""
The easiest and fastest way to stop the nag until YOU reboot is to select "Start", "Run", copy and paste this in: net stop wuauserv

    Select "OK"

That was imbedded in the update http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000294.html near the bottom of method #1 and is what is referred to as the "command line".

get ad aware and spybot, and run scans with them.

    Also, get an anti-virus

With no Information as to what they are?
    Anyone else have this problem?

It sounds like your computer has alot of spyware/viruses (I googled on virii and got this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plural_of_virus :)) on it, its possible a complete format and reinstall may be needed to correct your machine properly (it'll also probably speed it up a good bit). Make sure you back up your data first :)

(give spybot a go as well as a last resort: http://security.kolla.de and uninstall AVAST and see if AVG is any better at picking up viruses http://free.grisoft.com)

open a cmd windows (start - > run -> cmd)

    and then type (or paste)

    mkdir %ALLUSERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network

    i don't think that'll work tho, gl :)

Ive done a spyware/virus/malware/ad search in safe mode and deleted all infections this resulted in a small triumph, the updates downloaded but failed to install there is only the two remaining updates needed so if anyone has any ideas how to finish this off let me know...Thanx.
