Photography equipment insurance

Can anyone point me in the right direction for a company that will insure camera equipment ?
I am an amatuer but I would like the peace of mind when taking equipment with me, especially abroad.
I can't seem to find any Irish companies who will do it, and most of the ones advertised in the magazines are based in the U.K. and won;t insure non-residents.

I have enquired but my home insurance cover will only cover it if it is stolen from the house.
It will not cover equipment in use outside of the house or accidental damge.

Like I said in my original post, the ones advertised in the magazines are UK based and won't insure Irish residents. I have contacted 2 or 3 of them already.

Thanks for the suggestions but I'm not really looking for suggestions of how I might get insurance, as I have already spent some time looking into this.
I may not have been clear in my original post but I would like to hear from someone who has actually got insurance with a company in Ireland that will insure photographic equipment.

I work as a Photographer - and have had the luxury of having all me gear nicked on two seperate occasions in tha past 3yrs - still waiting on house insurance to cough up for first robbery couldnt be bothered trying to claim with second robbery - anyways - long story short , heard theres a place in Dublin that does insurance 012960163 - cant remember the name - I'm waiting on camera gear to arrive from USA via E-bay before I can call them. Tell them Paddy from PCPhoto recommended them to ya.

PS. on both occasions it was approx 15K worth of gear , and I'm buying about 6K worth , bought a 600mm f4 Canon lens recently - price here almost 8-9K (I think - just plucking the figure from my memory) ... bought mine for less than 6K.

Full-time professional photographers are almost always members of the professional bodies e.g. IPPA and arrange their insurance through them.

For semi-professionals and amateurs there is a company in Swords who are quite reasonable. They also do Public Liability insurance which is recomended for studio work etc

I put my equipment on the house insurance and apparently it's covered when I'm outside. I'll ring them to make sure. Insurer is Hibernian through a broker.
I'll give them a call on Monday to double-check that.

Most home insurances will cover you outside the home in "all risks cover". Most wont cover you if you use your gear for anything other than amateur use. If you have a lot of gear they wont cover you either.

I had too much gear and use it semi-professionally as well as for my own use.

BTW I contacted most of the ads in the magazines and they being UK based will not cover the ROI.

Ok, thanks to everyone for suggestions and information.
I will follow up on some of the numbers given and post my results over the next week or two.
I think the issue with house insurance is that different policies have different cover.
Certainly, my own policy does not cover the items outside of the home but others might.
    Thanks again.

I got mine insured on the house, they said it is covered outside the house aswell. Got a great rate, for 3k worth of equipment it only costs me 25 euro for a year.

Kcphoto let us know how you get on.

What about travelling abroad? Ill be away from Ireland for just under 2 years and I doubt travel insurance will cover nearly €2K worth of camera+ lenses?

    Any ideas

I contacted my house insurer (Hibernian) today about getting my camera equipment covered. They said I would have to list each item and that I could get cover for the specified items. This would cover me for loss, theft or damage at home or abroad. For about €4000 worth they said the additional premium would cost about €35 per annum. So, I've sent off my list of itemised items and approx value (using Irish prices as against the prices I actually paid). As well as the obvious stuff like camera bodies and lenses I've also included flash guns and tripod. Thanks to kcphoto for raising the issue. I had been under the illusion that my house insurance automatically covered all my gear but that is not the case. It would only do so, as far as I know, if the theft or damage happened in the house but would not apply if it happened elsewhere.

What value of equipment would you think would be worth itemizing for?

If I took into account my telescope and spotting scope and impending dSLR purchase it might be worth considering.

Consider the cost of replacing any or all of these items if they were stolen. A dSLR is going to cost you in excess of €800. Worth insuring for that alone.

I also use PJT Insurance. Costs about 300/year for up to 10,000 euro worth of equipment, all risks worldwide.
