    go for it

not sure what time of year you'll be going, I've travelled all around europe with inter-rail twice, once in May-June, the other time was in August (very busy month)

if you're going, be prepared to meet loads of Americans and Aussies on the backpacker trail, for me they added to the whole experience. to find out the usual places these people will be see either Lonely Planet's "Europe on a shoestring" or any of the "Let's Go" guides

or you could go off the beaten track and see the real place

I remember looking at one web site www.backpackeurope.com which was mildly amusing and useful

the main point is that there are tonnes of people who travel around Europe alone and some hostels are really good for meeting up with these like-minded souls, or you can stick to yourself and do your own thing

    have fun!

PS: having said that I'm not sure how many girls travel alone but it's definitely quite a few

Heya. I went backpacking around Europe in the summer of 2004 for 3.5 months and had an awesome time. I did a mixture of travelling on my own and on a hop-on, hop-off bus tour called Busabout.
How you should go about planning it is totally up to you, how you travel and where you want to go. Best to start by deciding where you may want to go, then check out Inter-rail and Eur-rail, Busabout and/or Contiki - depending if you want completely independant travel, semi-independant or all planned for you.
A great place to look for hostels is www.hostelworld.com. You're best off buying a gold membership before your trip otherwise you'll pay a surcharge for every booking and be warned that you have to book about 2 days in advance for all the hostels.
As ergo said, Lonely Planet and Let's Go are going to be really helpful for you (check out their websites) as is a map of Europe in general!
I didn't have any hassles travelling around on my own (I was 24 at the time) and found that people were happy to help a girl travelling on her own and I met people (singles, couples and groups) everywhere I went. Hostels are a great place to meet people!!
If you have any specific questions or want to chat about anything, feel free to PM me and I'd be happy to help out as much as I can.
