NEC ND-3540A DVD drive not reading CDs Help!

I have a problem with any kind of cd playback/reading in my ND-3540A DVD
    recorder drive.
    Firmware version 1.03 is installed.
The drive will play and read DVDs without any problem but it will not
    read any kind of cd.
I have uninstalled all of my burning software and dvd player software to
try to eliminate them as a possible cause but the issue still remains.
The drive had been working correctly until recently. I can't figure out
what might have caused the problem and i need help to find a solution.
    Any help appreciated Thanks

I have the 3550A and it gives intermittent problems like this as well. I find rebooting fixes the problem. Sorry I can't offer more concrete help.

try latest firmware, you may have to send it back to NEC.

I had a plextor px708a that had a similar problem after a while, sent it to Plextor, and it was back within a week, dunno what NEC would be like.

(to reassure other people, i've also used many NEC drives, and never had a problem with them, sh*t happens tho)

had a NEC drive in previous pc, starting giving this type of problem also after a few months, returned it to supplier for replacement and got replacement, I'd return to where you purchased and get refund/replacement, it does not do what it's supposed to, dont get NEC involved, you did not buy it off them

I had a oldish NEC 2510A drive and it always had read probs for both cd and dvd, It doesn't do error correction or very poorly as many of my backups it failed to read, on CD R and DVD r, It also struggled with some retail audio cds to (Standard un-protected ones), I bought a BenQ DW1640 on komplett for around 50 Euro and I have never had any probs reading/writing, I tryed all the NEC official and unofficial firmware upgrades and they didn't help one bit,

Well, its UNDER WARRANTY from NEC, not who you bought it off, so its generally quicker to go straight to NEC with the problem.

For example, I bought a Toshiba LCD TV, if it has a problem, i'm no way going to send it back to the UK based store I purchased it from, but go to Toshiba directly, as they'll fix it far quicker.

I estimate the NEC drive in question was released during the summer, so is therefore under its 1 year guarantee from supplier, which is better than a warranty arrangement.
Re returning the tv, I get your point, when I buy online I tend to prefer co's that pay for return postage so for me SVP is a great site, i got a Divx player off them and it was basically not working as I liked, one email and they arranged/paid for return courier pick up and full refund.
Its one of those things you need to keep in mind when purchasing on the net.

Parhaps the OP can help by pointing out where purchased?
Also, please note that folk upgrading firmware can invalidate their guarantee/warranty, read the small print
