i'm thinking of getting a 350d in the near future, but as a body only, as i want to get a better lens than the standard 18-55 mm lens,
i'm just wondering what would be a good all round lens for less than 150 euro (i know it is pretty low margin for good lenses, but i'm on a tight budget, ) for a beginner like me..

You wont really get a good all rounder for that money. You could buy a 50mm 1.8 which is decent for 100quid.

The standard 18-55 is an excellent lens for the money, for 150 your choices are limited to older used lenses and if not Canon probably won't work with the 350 anyway.

Where are you buying the camera?

I recently bought the 350D Body (€747) and a 17-85mm Is lense (€475) and I couldnt be happier, I also got a canon 50mm 1.8 lense which I cant recommend enough for the price (€95)

The 17-85mm lense is a great everyday lense, and the IS is very handy if you dont have a tripod or great light.

    Sean.

    All prices are from AC-FOTO.COM

For the price your looking for Id pay €229 for the Sigma 28-105/2.8-4.0 Aspherical seems to be a good lense for the money.

Actually, I think I'd advise you get the kit lens anyway unless you can up your lens budget a good bit. It's less than EUR50 extra when bought as the kit and even if you get another zoom lens, no other lens will get you as wide without costing a good bit more cash.

The 17-85 IS covers the range but is too expensive. Secondhand 28-105 f/3.5-4.5s go for about EUR150. It has a reasonable reputation as a good consumer lens but the range probably wouldn't be as useful as the kit lens on a 350D. For your money you could get the 18-55 kit lens and then choose either a cheap telephoto zoom (maybe secondhand) or the 50mm. Either would add to the kit, but neither could replace it. I think I'd rather have a prime for low light and/or wider aperture (eg the aforementioned 50mm f/1.8).

Personally I'd say a beginner should get the kit lens, learn about the camera, and when you've found the limits of the lens (be it at the wide or long ends or the quality or the performance in low light), then decide what you actually want to buy. And there's me looking like I know what I'm talking about!

thanks for all the replies.., i think i will go ahead with your advice and get the kit lens..
i wasn't too sure at first, cos i kept getting mixed views on wether the kit lens was good or bad... also had a look at the prices for better lens, and they are definetely out of the question for the mo...
