    Ok, we're kinda over the emotional highs and lows of Christmas / New Years and heading into the mid-January doldrums. I saw a piece in one of the papers that suggested that we don't all have to act "like our mothers" ("OH NOES, I'HAVEN't CL3AN3D tHE _________ YET1 !!!!1!!") over Christmas. If the dining room is a mess on Christmas Day then it's OK!! Its better to have your family together and the dining room a mess than be apart and have it tidy.

    My youngest niece (18 months) spent two weeks ripping paper off presents, whether it was for her or not. :D

    Anyway, the paper suggested we do some things to wear off the stress - go for a walk, feed the birds (remember Park Life "I feed the pigeons I sometimes feed the sparrows too, it gives me a sense of enormous well being (parklife)"), do something different, do something anti-consumption.

    So as we head into this new year, any suggestions on what makes you feel a little better about your world?

    I normally hate this type of response but it was cool running to the shop there in the cold, just as it started to rain. Bracing, but not in a bad way.

    i'm doing the leaving a jogging is a god send, can't study without going for a jog now.

    I find getting out on my motorbike helps clear my head and put a smile on my face!

    And i also agree with the exercise part, cant wait to get back to rugby once i get over this sickness!

    Take a drive out to Dun laoghaire via the coastal road on your own and go as far south as you can for about an hour taking regular stops to admire the view and then drive back. Preferably after dark. That'll take your mind off anything.

    Drive to Glendalough and take a walk around the lakes. That's what myself and my g/f did on New Years day.

    Planning a holiday, and then looking forward to it is a good way to perk yourself up if you can afford it, even if it's a city break.
    Book a couple of tickets for a gig, Little Britain tickets are on-sale if your into it.

    Im going away on hols in a few weeks so personally Im looking forward to that. Its been an excuse not to go too overboard at christmas & exercise like a ****er all this month. :D personally Im loving January.

    Studying makes me feel a bit better, like I've accomplished something worthwhile. But for some reason I can't motivate myself to do it. Ah heck, I think i'll go for a jog.

    Personally I like January, I tend to get the doldrums before and during Christmas, so by the new year I feel revved up and ready to go again, for me it is psychological, I feel a new year a clean slate, time for new beginnings. The things that cheer me up is a walk along the beach (I live close to the sea), I've booked myself some Tai Chi classes, and a massage tomorrow. I often feel that the 'out with the old and in with the new' feeling is enough to get me through January, but maybe I'm just odd like that.

    for me, simple things that i'd been overlooking and been meaning to do for ages, such as defrosting the freezer and cleaning it, reading that chapter of a book for college, replying to that letter demanding money for one thing or another, etc, etc... just anything i'd been putting off - i like to get cracking on. that makes me feel good. and also sets me up with a good motivational attitude for going back to college afdter the holidays.

    Going to a comedy gig-anyold gig just to get a good laff!
    Also going for a really fast walk(killnaskully powerwalkers eat your heart out!) With a walkman on full blast with all your favourite tunes on!

    for me going to my fencing classes after lectures is fantastic, as is a good walk with my mom.
    i also find doing art really relaxing but rarely have time to do it with my workload at the moment.

    i do hope everyone on this forum has a good new year and feels really good about themselves and their lives :).
    Christmas is a strange time when you can feel really down if your not going out with anyone or aren't spending time with your family. my motto is to take the bad with the good and to always to appreciate what you do have no matter how small it is. once you do that you can become a very happy person :).

    Lots of fresh air and excercise are natural ways to feeling good. As this thread was started by a mod I think it should be pinned for us all to add to and suggest. We all get down now and again and need a pickmeup.

    I knew I'd be suffering from the Post-christmas thing, so I jacked in my job before christmas, and booked myself a round the world ticket- I'm leaving for Thailand on Monday. Lets hope the sunshine wakes me up a bit! Beats a rainy January in Dublin anyhow.

    do you play a musical instrument? take one up if you don't, great way to relieve strees by making you focus and concentrate on something..

    join a samba band - GREAT way to release tension - a circle of people all drumming and making loads of noise in a shaerd tempo and energy - very primal instinct, blows all the cobwebs out. you meet some lovely people to.

    take up juggling or [easier] playing poi [the set of balls on a string you whirl around] - poi in particular is a great way to just stand there with your brain totally focussed on something fun and non competitive - once the lower part of your brain is totally focussed on a mundane task you can free the rest of your brain up...

    climb a mountain. not everest or anything, go out to the sugarloaf one afternoon, it looks huge but you can get up and back in about 90 minutes - even if you're as unfit as i am... i go up about once or twice a year... the feeling of achievement when you get to the top and look down [even though its just a rocky hill a pensioner can easily make it up without breaking too much of a sweat] is quite stirring.
