You should check out this ViewSonic VX715 - Flat panel display - TFT - 17" which you can buy for £199.87 which is about €247 here.

maybe also invest in a pair of glases, if you're staring at a screen for 8 hours a day you are putting a hugh strain on your eye... and esp if your getting headaches, time for glasses while on the computer.

Or just try raising the refresh rate.

Is it safer to wear glasses while on a computer? Or go without them? It hurts me a bit when I take them off and look at the monitor.

isn't that locked on a flat pannel monitor though?

one of the reasons why i don't upgrade my 19 inch monitor as it's doing 1600x1200 at 100hz

No, you can change refresh rates on a TFT but the way they refresh is totally different.

I was recomending increasing the refresh on his CRT, his current monitor

TFT's don't "refresh" like CRT's. When something changes on a TFT screen, the appropriate pixels are lit to reflect the change. CRT's refresh several times per second, hence the flicker effect. The default refresh rate in Windows is 60Hz (i.e. 60 refreshes per second) which is murder on the eyes - you should use at least 85Hz on your CRT. Its fine to leave a TFT on 60hz since there is no flicker.

A colleague of mine started getting headaches a few months back but didn't know what was causing it. We work on computers 8 hours a day as well. He went for an eye test and was told he needed glasses as that's what was causing his headaches.

He now wears glasses and to my knowledge he hasn't been suffering from headaches since. Putting strain on your eyes is going to cause headaches. That's a fact. You should take regular breaks away from your monitor. i'm not talking about work for an hour or two, then take 15 mins break.

I mean every 15 mins or so just turn away and focus on something further away in your office, like a picture on a wall or something. just scan around the room and let your eyes re-adjust. Trust me, it works!

I just found this thread in a search, sorry to bring it up again but I was going to get a flat panel monitor too. I don't have any headaches but my eyes have gotten really bad long vision since I've had to work at a computer all day for the last 2 years...not constantly obviously! :p

So I've just changed the refresh rate on my big old Dell CRT monitor from 60Hz to 85Hz. The display went really small so I've re-sized it. But I suppose what I'm asking is, is this enough? I always had great eyesight so its a bit unnerving when you realise that you can't make out things in the distance. I really don't want it to get any worse and wouldn't mind getting another monitor if that would help. Does anybody know about this???

The reason for damaging your eyes while being on a computer is down to the refresh rate of the CRT and what you are focusing on.

You are constantly focusing your eyes a particular object which is less that 1 metre away from you, this strains your eye as your focal point is not changing. It depends on how long you are working on a monitor without stepping away, but if you are looking at it for some hours, i'd suggest every half an hour looking away and focusing on objects in the room that are long distance, let the eyes expand and contract to prevent the muscle being lazy.

Its the lazy muscle that causes people to be short-sighted.

If you are using a CRT monitor keep the refresh rate at or above 75Hz. The more cycles the monitor performs a second the easier the image being displayed is on your eyes. I would say the Headaches are more related to the Refresh Rate than not looking away from the monitor over long periods.

    Hope this helps...

change your focus as often as you can,
stare at something about 15 metres away, the wall, out the window.
anything to relieve the tension of holding your eyes at a constant level for so long.

    get eye drops,
i find optrex for tired eyes is good, but talk to your pharamcist
