Now that it's 2006, we can turn our attention to this summer's WSOP... ;)

Actually, I was just wondering, after a chat with some people at Xmas, whether the only qualifiers for the NLHE main event (for example) are online or in Vegas? For example, would there be a chance of the Fitz or somesuch do satellites? I suspect not, but there seems to be a lot more offline qualifying for fairly major tournies going on these days (the Ladbrokes Cruise, the BoyleSports Poker thing, etc)

Both clubs do satellites every year - Merrion had a 350 rebuy and the fitz had a 350 freezout.

Love to see a cardroom do a ladder/steps qualifier, say:

Fast Self deal STT €10 for 2 seats before Weekly tournie @ €50
    leads to:
    Weekly tournie with ~50 runners @ €50 = wins 10 seats at €250
    Leads to:
Monthly/Bi monthly final - Qualifiers get free seat, others can buy in for €250
Say 50 runners gives 1 WSOP ticket, plus expenses. Voila, WSOP for €10!

I think you can easily call it €10k anyway. You'll have plenty of use for change in getting there and staying there.

I guess for the first three levels it is.

After that taking into account they are not full tables, it is fair enough.

I haven't seen an easier way to qualify for the WSOP, for $7+$1, you have to beat 26 people, with plenty of second and third chances for your money.

Yeah jumping in at the $7 level looks good.

Taking into account they are not full tables -- this doesn't make a difference, does it? It's not as if the site has to pay for a dealer for each table.

There is a lot of hidden rake too in any of these steps things: every time you win one it looks like you've won say $63 in cash value, but it turns out to be worth only $56, and the site drops the extra $7 as well as the $9 they took from the tourney you just played. I remember seeing someone doing the numbers on a party poker version of this (don't have a link but I suspect it's linked from andy ward's blog at pokersoft.blogspot.com); it's impossible to be precise but the site could be getting $5k or more on average from a competition that ultimately pays out $10k. Obviously good for Culchie but bad value for the punter.

Before being too harsh on Culchie this might not be right in this case. Look at these numbers:

If this is correct the value of the prize pool from stage 4 is nominally $63 plus 8 plus $0.96 = $71.96, which would mean the site is taking only 4 cents from the prize pool. Fair play to them if this is right, but I don't know why they wouldn't advertise it like this instead of advertising $7+$1.

It is right, as per above.

If you play Betfair STT's it is $5+$1, £3+.60, Paradise is $5+1, Pokerstars is $3+.40.

Vegasbaby STT's are all 10% .... just these ladders it seems are different.
There's plenty of second and third chances that count in your favour as well.

Anyways, as I said before, I don't know of an easier route to a very reasonable crack at WSOP qualification.
The schedule is above, you are entitled to your opinion as well of course.
