I have just been let go today from my current job which I have been working at since last Febuary. Am I able to claim back any Tax from last year while I am unemployed now?

    Thanks
    S.

    No I wouldn't think so.

It's a new tax year so what you do now has nothing to do with last year.

However, it's always a good idea to do a tax return every year as I always find I am consistantly overtaxed. Send them all your doctors receipts, proof you are renting, etc.

    Hi,
I was in the same situation last year ,i finished up my job in september. I signed on for unemployment benefit for 1 month, sent in the form for a tax reclaim, the revenue paid me back a percentage of the tax i had paid, when i was still on the dole 6/8 weeks later, they paid me back another portion

But i think the previous poster was correct, you can only claim in the current year. The tax year starts afresh in january each year as opposed to the old way of April each year
I may be wrong but i dont think you will get any refund , ring the revenue helpdesk and they will clarify for you immediately

Unless you overpaid tax during 2005 they won't be able to give you anything back. It's unlikely that a PAYE worker who was employed to the end of the year will be owed anything. You might be owed a few euro from the start of this year until today (plus any severance pay you get) but not all that much. It might be worth looking into if you're getting holiday pay and notice.

The most important piece of tax to get back now that you are unemployed is your PRSI which can be reclaimed by signing on. Having PRSI contributions built up makes this a hassle free experience.
